Did anyone catch the Jeff Beck tribute to Les Paul last night on channel 13 PBS. It was a terrific show filmed at the Iridium last year and was a tribute more towards Les's music and playing than gear. He also did some early Elvis,Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran songs with a killer band in which Brian Setzer came out and joined him tearing it up on on 20 Flight rock and Shake Rattle and Roll, and this Irish singer Imelda May was just superb singing Mary Fords parts on songs like How High The Moon and Tiger Rag to name a few, but it was amazing how they had her double tracked to sing with herself as her parts were all live. The musicianship, vocals and of course Beck made this a real treat.
Becks playing was just off the charts and he was staying true to most of the original parts, though he started cutting loose on the intro to of all things Walking in the Sand which he could make a brilliant instrumental of.All these songs are from the birth of rock and it is amazing how pretty complex the playing is, as these guys were making it up back then as they were going along. It was weird seeing Kirk Hammet, Zack Wylde, Warren Haynes and Ace Freehly to name a few in what was an invitation crowd of about 200 digging all these 50s classics.
Beck will be at the Beacon doing this show on March 27-Of course I am going. Their are also 2 shows in Texas and one at the Fillmore in SF out of a very small tour schedule of about 18 shows that I saw.
