...this old and unremarkable amp/cab setup sounds extremely good!
Just wanted to share my experience with this rig a couple nights ago playing a gig with my tropical band in a small town three hours far from mine (there has been lots of activity with that band recently, BTW). When I saw it for the first time I was like :hmm: and I'm sure that most of my band mates were less forgiving than myself. But after turning it on and tweaking knobs trying to find something that could work for me I was like WOW!
Well, actually I went like that when the band started performing. It's hard to describe with just words. Of course it is not a hi-fi sounding rig, but the combination of power and clarity I got from it simply stunned me. As I told the owner, "it sounds slightly dirty but so clear at the same time. I love it". I could hear every nuance in my playing without sounding harsh. Two 18" speakers and no tweeter aren't supposed to give a well-defined tone but anyway I could feel/hear any change, from fingerstyle to slap to (really loud and clear) harmonics... I was so pleased. Of course, one of the singers who only knows about mid-scooped "boom boom" coming from the bass had to tell me at a certain point "that amp sucks" but I just ignored him. When I asked the owner about the extension cab, he said "the only thing I know is that it's a very cheap one, built somewhere here long ago".
Here are the settings I used:
Sort of a "moderately boosted flat setting", I think. My Bongo settings were as usual: Both pickups plus piezo bridge fully open, low mids in the flat position and the other three frequencies (lows, hi-mids and highs) slightly past the flat position (all three around +1).
Regretfully I don't have a faithful recording of this setup in action, but anyway you can have an idea by watching this video: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p0sNCSoRgo&fmt=22"]YouTube - Orquesta Rey & Rey en Charalá: "Isla Para Dos"[/ame] Again, I just want to share my delight. Thanks for reading!
