Thanks for posting this - it's very interesting. Very obviously on his Musicman bass, and sounds like flatwounds (probably the original ones it came with - as he stated in an interview). I'd say he may have the mutes applied to the E and A strings but judging by the 2nd octave fills and the bass part in the instrumental in the middle of the song, not on D and G - quite a lot of overtones on those as well (in fact a surprising amount). I'm pleased to hear I got all the notes and his fills right when I learned it in 1979 - but the main riff is very slightly more complex than I thought!
