My son has a Classic Stingray 5, and is looking to upgrade his amp (a combo Hartke).

I'm looking for suggestions from the group on rigs that you recommend for 5-string basses.

He likes jammy music (think Phish, Dead, Moe, etc.) and jazz.

Thanks for you input and happy Thanksgiving!

A lot of people on this forum are big Markbass people. I was planning on buying a Mesa set up a while ago until I went and played a few Markbass cabs and amps. Needless to say, I left very impressed. When testing the cabs and amps I was using, I was playing a Stingray 5 string and every note was crystal clear and not distorted. I was also reading somewhere that Markbass has one of the lowest breakdown percentages. I forget the percentage but it was extremely low.

I love 12'-speakers for 5-string basses. With a decent 2x12' cab your son should be equipped for anything from jazz to rock.
I am not that much into the markbass cabs. In the end you should go to a store and judge by ear.

It is safe to say that you can not really go wrong with anything from Genz Benz, Mesa or Markbass when it comes to heads. The little Aguilar 500 also is supposed to sound nice.

Yes, sorry, I left out that little detail. The answer is, I haven't really set a budget - since I'm still trying to get basic info - like, where to start.

So, $750 - $1,500 perhaps?? It's probably fair to say that I'm leaning more toward the high-end, but not at the end of the spectrum. I'm viewing this as a long-term investment - it's much more than just a passing interest for him.

Thanks all for the responses.

Take a good look at Genz Benz Streamliner and Shuttle amps. They're excellent amps for any bass, and Genz cabs are outstanding as well.
