Hello

Just having a think about this one! The EBMM Stingray has a very excellent and powerful sound that reallllly cuts through.

I love it, and even though I still love the classic P Bass/Jazz Bass sound, its still interesting to see the difference an Amp can make to a already brilliant instrument.

I know a lot of players look for modern hi-fi clear amps. I myself will one day add one of these to my arsenal of amps. Probably a GK.

What do people use? Whats it like through a full on tube rock amp? My preference is dirty rock tone, but I havent tried my Stingray through it yet, (Orange AD200b Mk 3).

Anyone tried a Stingray for full on rock/punk....whats it sound like with a tube amp? I imagine like an earthquake! Im going to try mine in a few weeks when I get the chance to crank it :)

I use my MM's with AER amps (basscube and extension cabinet) Small cabinets but still 800 Watts. (Almost no colouration and sounds incredible) or with my Eden WT1205 with 410 and 210. That really brings out the growl from my SR5. (that's why I like em so much!) I really like that sound!
Downside is that you have to like the "eden colour" in terms of sound.
But for me it is a good match.

I like an amp to give me as 'natural' a sound of the bass as possible, my current preference is Markbass. I love the sound of my 'Ray through Markbass kit, the seem to complement each other.
I use effects if I want to dirty the sound up.

I'd love to help you with my own preference but you know sounds are very individual, what I like you might not like and the next guy probably will.

In my case and just as an example my Stingray5 is much happier with my valve Trace Elliot combo than with my Mark Bass one, whereas strangely my Bongo is more at home with the Mark Bass than it is with Trace Elliot.

In addition to personal preference in basses, whereby some people have more than one, same applies with amps, you can't do it all with just the one.

Mark Bass amps are great but so are the vintage Traces of 18-20 years ago and a Mark Bass cannot emulate their growl and valve warmth, Trace are noisy, hummy and rattly, but they kick some serious ass when you wack the volume up, with simple paper cones, none of the fancy neodymium or alluminum cones you get in the modern ones.

My best advice to you is to go from shop to shop with your own bass and try as many amps as you can, then make your mind up.

Good luck of course.

My sound...

...Sterling (4), natural ash, maple, tort, Slinkies - old SWR 350 (chrome face) - Ampeg SVT 210 / SVT 115. I then DI to the house through a BBE 1000.

Never fails to get compliments from other musicians.

I'm yet to hear a Stingray sound bad through any decent quality rig.

What Mark said! Seriously we could sit here telling all sorts of different amps but it comes down to what you are looking for. Solid state, tube, hybrid. Power? Features? Old school, new school? Grit no grit?Size/ Weight? What's it going to power? And the list goes on and on. Best advice... go testing. If it is a quality rig the Ray is going to sound good... period.

+1

IMO you can't beat the EBMM/GK combination.
I have found that through all my cabinets, this match produces consistent results. Whether it be Aguilar. Epifani, GK or SWR cabinets it all sounds wonderful. I suggest that when ever possible, try before you buy. :)

Life just got way better. I picked up a markbass f1 and oh my god. This is the best tone I have ever had. The lows are so solid. Slap it with my thumb and tight bass like I have never felt it. WOW! Blows away my svt-6 I just sold for $675 and I only paid $400 for the f1. Gotta get rid of the behringer now too.

I have never tried any GK stuff although I have heard good stuff about them.

I am currently running a MarkBass LMII into two Bergantino 1x12s and they sound pretty good. If I want a bit (or a lot) of tube grind, I just dial that in on my SansAmp BPDDI. I otherwise tend to leave the head controls relatively flat and let the basses do their thing.

I am using an GK700RB-II head and a 212 GK Neo cabinet with a Bongo (of course) and the rig is wonderful. Much more powerful than anything that I've use in the past and has a great eq to tailor the sound as well.

So I guess that I am echoing the comments of several folks here on the forum. GK amps and MM Basses are great combinations.

Cheers,

Shepp..
