Sorry to be this way, but that store looks great.

The more the merrier!

+1...the only downside that I see is the same downside that I see at GC. You go from one store to the next and see the exact same color combinations on the exact same basses. You buy a bass and see the exacts same bass in the exact same place on the wall the next day. Then when you live near a smaller city like I do, every SR5 (or whatever you have) that you see is exactly like the one that you have.

Sure, the big chains tend to buy what seems popular, even if it's not, so it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

This is why the GOOD smaller dealers will survive (think DuBaldo). Because they're not locked into black/maple. Ask me where I go when I want something specific and I know it won't be hanging on the wall at GC.

There is a Best Buy here in town literally 4 stores away from the GC, which is pretty much 2 miles down the same street from us. It will be interesting to see what happens between those two stores and what Nick and I do with our stores.

Will BB have more than one

It is rare at Best Buy to purchase the display model. They always have backstock. I wonder if it will be different with guitars? The thing that frustrates me about GC is that for higher end basses almost all of their stock is hanging on the wall awaiting abuse. The only way to avoid this is to be there within a day or two of something new being put out on the wall. That alone could make BB appealing.

The competition would be good. GC already owns Music 123 and Musicians Friend. They are driving the small stores out of business (and some should be going out of business.) What will happen once GC achieves a stranglehold on the brick & mortar market? No competition will mean higher prices and possibly declining service. No competion is no good.

Best Buy is a very well run store. They are well-stocked, the purchase process is painless and the return process is pretty good. Much better than Circuit City. But it's probably the existance of Circuit City, Fry's, etc. that keeps BB efficient.

Kids this is a great thread. Without getting involved in the question of BB/GC/mom and pop there is prevailing thought that if there is Best Buy and Guitar Center that the independents will go away leaving the world with the internet as the only alternative.

I also need to point out that with Guitar Center these are lifers. They grew up in the business and love it. With a Best Buy it seems to be a case of the MI business having greater profit margins ber square foot and strictly a maximizing of non productive square feet and leveraging their customer base....Im sure that they have stocked the venture with good people but what happens if Patio heaters need more square footage and has higher magins? Bottom line....are they in it for the long haul or taking advantage of an industry that is underserved by the preexisting dealer network? Margins aside if they thought that our dealer network was getting all of the business it would not be an attractive proposition for them.

I must say those BB pictures are not what I expected at all. Still, their selection seems to be strictly rock-based, so hopefully the smaller stores can still survive by covering the orchestral / school band niche that doesn't look to be served by BB or GC. In fact, Sam Ash is the only big music store I've been to that sells horns and woodwinds for example.

I am lucky that I live a few miles away from Chez DuBaldo.

Music & Arts

I believe that GC owns Music and Arts. They are like a much smaller version of the former Brook Mays chain. They sell band, (I believe orchestra) and entry level guitars.

Soon you'll be able to buy anything everywhere with no expert advice or support whatsoever.
The real world is trying to catch up with the internet.
The internet will win.

The pics I saw like others have said was not what I expected either, so BP is EBMM part of what they will sell?

Now my buying loyalty lies within a couple of forum members who are dealers and GC but just curious.

Well atleast we know that like some of the rest of us, you go looking at basses again the very next day after you buy one (if not the same day). =)
