What Cabs do you like???

4x12's seem too directional and hard to move.

2x12's seem like a good compromise but the good ones (the bigger size) are almost as big as a 4x12 but dont usually have casters.

1x12's are convenient but dont sound big for the heavy stuff.

Open Back cabs are not too directional and easy for my drummer to hear on stage, but arent tight enough.

Closed Back cabs are too directional and impossible to hear on stage without a good monitor setup.

Who uses what and why?

I have a Genz Benz 2x12 with casters. It's one of those massive 2x12s you mentioned. Sounds huge. Is huge. But is easy to move :p Granted, I have no amp right now, though.

Best sounding ones, IMO, are slanted Rectifier 4x12 cabs. I'd love to try some Port City cabs, though. They look awesome.

i run a 2x12 combo (open back) and a 2x10 extension cab that is somewhat openback... I made the conversion and it sounds killer- with the 2x12 and 2x10 im creating a more dynamic tonal range that is very appealing everyone can hear.

I for the most part, prefer closed back, because I simply don't like loosing all that low end.

What you could do is, take two 2x12's and stand them up. You can tilt them to make them more directional than a 4x12. The only downside is moving them and using up two Outs as oppsoed to just one for a 4x12, but I'm sure someone has rigged something to solve that problem somewhere.

For me 2x12 cabs just sound more focused compared to 4x12s.
As far as which 2x12s I prefer, Genz Benz makes a great one also believe it or not the Marshall 1936 2x12 stereo cab is also right up there.

4 x 12, closed back with celestion vintage 30's - just awesome!

+1 or experiment with different speakers. You may find you prefer the response of a lower wattage speaker. Greenbacks (25w) are a great crunchy speaker and react quickly. They don't have a lot of headroom so not the best choice for clean tones, but if your using a Marshall style amp they do match well.

I never had good luck with 2x12 closed or open back cabs. I would only consider a 1x12 if running a wet/dry/wet system and use the 1x12 for the wet effects.

The 4x12 just has that full sound that you can't get anywhere else.

I haven't tried out enough high-end 4x12s to really get to know them, but the CAE 4x12 cab for the OD100 amps sounds amazing, as does the Bogner Uberkab.

I'm currently using a Carvin V3 4x12 with Eminence Governors and Celestion G12T75's in an X-pattern. Sounds excellent.

Never get a cab made of MDF... ply always sounds better to me.

As for 2x12s, if you can put up the cash and have the patience to wait for an Ear Candy cab, I hear they'll knock over most 4x12's.

I love my EVM-12L loaded Mesa 3/4 back 1x12 cab. It's portable, small, and sounds amazing for any style of music. The 3/4 back cab design allows for excellent bass response while allowing cleans to breathe as well. It sounds so sweet with my Mark V at any volume. It is not directional and fills the room perfectly. I had a Recto 2x12 cab w/ V30s for a few weeks and the 3/4 back cab sounded better to my ears.

I dig 2x12 cabs. The Genz Benz mentioned earlier is a good one.

Right now, I'm using a 4x12 Recto cab (the oversized one) and it sounds HUGE.

4x12 with v30s inside Kool & Elfring. not really available to you US folks, but MESA is probably more affordable than a euro made cab. for microphones, the Almighty SM57 is stock, the Audix I5 is great and agressive and the cascade fathead 2 is awesome and rich sounding (but ribbon, studio only).

+1

I have 2, loaded with Black Label EVM12L's - running stereo from my Axe-FX via a Tech21 SS amp.

But I'm mighty tempted to try the FRFR thing.
(I find myself playing a lot through the Yamaha studio monitors these days)

benz g flex IS the SH!T ~check it out great for rock & metal they say a 2x12 is comprable to a normal 4x12 hard to believe till you try one it really is ~as said before it needs a lil eq'ing being ported it's easy to be too boomy if you dont dial it in correctly but once you do AWSOME I have 2-2x12's and one 4x12~I have carvin legacy's(4) and marshall av1960(1) to me genz is the best modern sounding out there and doesn't fall apart at high volume! almost TOO loud! If there's such a thing!:p

I run either a closed back Soldano 2x12 or 4x12 depending on the gig and what I feel like moving. Usually it's the 2x12, although I think I like the sound of the speakers in the 4x12 more (more pleasing high end) - maybe I will mix 'n match them. (Eminence X12000 vs Eminence Legends)
