Off Topic Best Cab For Hard Rock/Metal???

Marshall 4 X 12 angled cab with vintage black blacks. The bee's knees for hard rock. I don't do metal though. I can't grow my hair long enough without my head looking like a mossy stump.

Best cabs I ever tried: Two Rock vertical 2x12, Bogner 2x12OS, Bogner 4x12 with the Two Rock winning. Expensive though, but amazing cab.

I run a Behringer BG412S 4x12 cabinet.

It's cheap, can be configured for stereo or mono use, has Jensen speakers, and the speakers are angled specially within the slant 4x12 cab so that they maximize the stereo image. The top speakers are sort of angled up and outward.

Yeah, I know that there is some Behringer gear that you should run from, especially their products with power amps. But I've had this cab for at least 5 years now and I've dragged it around everywhere. It's durable (except the casters suck, I replaced them with Ernie Ball casters and it's fantastic now!), and the speakers sound really good. I've never had the sound break up at any volume, and I tend to play most of my gigs outdoors so I crank it on stage and it moves a lot of air!

I use a Carvin 4x12 w/ Vintage 30's but it's too damn directional and hard to manage. I shouldn't complain about size/weight (I'm a 230lb, 28 year old bodybuilder) but that doesn't change it's awkwardness when moving it and difficulty fitting it on a small stage or in my car.

I like an open back 1x12, but when I need a tight chug type sound it just will not do.

I have never tried a 2x12 (well recently enough to compare).





I was hoping someone would have "the answer" (tight bass response, not too directional, easy to move/fit in places, big sound, etc) but I dont think there is one. Maybe guitarists just need different cabs for different situations.

BUT the most important part which no one mentioned is 3 more EMPTY cabinets to look the part, not only sound the part.

I agree ... I don't think there's a right answer. Switching cabs can give you pretty dramatic results.

I've got a 4x12, 3 2x12s (closed, open, ported) and a ported 1x12. Different speakers in each so it's tough to compare.

My preference is the ported 1x12 or ported 2x12 (the Port City ones are great). It's good most of the time, not too directional and actually sounds pretty big. The 4x12 is just a pain. (I only keep it as it's an old Marshall with the pre-Rolas in there, so don't want to part with it.)

At Steve Morse's clinic run at the DuBaldo store last year Steve ran a single Engl 4x12 angled cab for each of his amps (he runs one wet and one dry) on their sides, each set almost like a v and referenced directionality when questioned about it. I don't recall the exact answer however.

Does a ported or partial open back 2x12 stay tight when things get heavy?

I think a closed back cab has the tightest low end response. The Port City 2x12 is not far behind, though. It seems to be the best of both closed and open cabs- tight bass and a large sound, with the dispersion of an open back. It's not a traditional ported design, it's more of a slot that reflects a portion of the sound out the front.

I've got the regular 2x12. Lots of guys seems to like the oversized one (its bassier), but that one is quite a bit bigger. The regular one is nice and portable.

So I dunno, it's not exactly the same thing but I think the tradeoff is very worthwhile.

Beej, what are your Port City cabs loaded with?

The 2x12 has old G12-65s from the 80s. Very broken in, killer sounding speakers in that. My 1x12 is actually a Suhr Badger cab. Came with a V30 but a I put a Scumback M75-65W (pre-Rola greenback clone, but with a higher wattage and a little bassier) in there recently and have been liking it.

I use a 4x12 Blackstar slanted cab which i got recently with the new series one head which is loaded with V30 celestions speakers.
The cab is closed back and it sounds awesome with my guitars!
