Cables contributed so much to the tone. I just had a big revelation:
My Planet Waves Custom Series cables (with the gold plated plug) sound way better than my much more expensive Monster cable.

What are your favorite cables and why?

During the Steve Morse clinic in Connecticut recently, steve specifically mentioned that he uses "middle of the road" cables. Cheap cables take away from his tone and top of the line cables allow in too much, including unwanted sound to get through.

That's a great point. Maybe that's why my mid range cables sound way better than the high end Monster.

I usually make my own and use Belden wire with good connectors. I also have a few EB cables in the righ. I have seen the tips break off of too many Monster cables to ever consider using them. The EB cables are a great bang for the buck!

Have used Spectraflex Vintage and Fatsoflex guitar- and speakercables for 15 years. Durable, lifetime waranty, affordable and great sound too. Plus I love the looks, some nice retro-patterns available.

I've had the Mogami Gold series (not the uber expensive platinum) for the past year or so and I've been really happy with them...

Like the amp threads ... you're going to get a million different answers here.

In general, low-capacitance cables are going to give you more high end. If you're playing clean and use long cables they're often the way to go.

Where you want more middy sounds (more gain), it's less of an issue and your standard cables are fine. If you play with single coils it's handy to have some of both.

EB make great cables. I'd definitely have a look at them.

Right now I'm using a Planet Waves cable because it was the only stereo cable I could find to use with my JP's piezo out. I like it well enough, and it certainly seems rugged.

mid range cables seem to be the best bang fir buck vs. performance/tone.

some guys can get crazy with all this stuff. at one forum me and Beej hang at, they go into cable directionality. seriously, I am not kidding - the differences between which end goes in the guitar and which end goes in the amp.

This enters into the realm of black magic / voodoo IMO. It's almost as bad with strings and pickups too though. Bring out the magic dust and sprinkle it on while you're at it.

I do agree that there is some science behind things but some stuff is so subjective that it's almost pointless.

Just play guitar and be happy!

Lots of snake oil in the cabling world. Monster is pretty bad about it, but nothing in the guitar world is as bad as the Hi-Fi Audio world. I've seen Hi-Fi speaker cables go for THOUSANDS of dollars. That's just outright INSANE.

Just to add to the dislike of Monster, anyone who wants a good laugh should read this Monster vs. Blue Jeans Cable. The response is classic, and the final few paragraphs are hysterical. They never heard from Monster again.

We have a lot of talk here about trademarks and such, it's interesting to see what happens when a company makes an unfounded claim.
