From another thread...

My understanding is that, back then, some new finishes would come out under "special" until it was decided to continue to offer that finish or not.

Trans White "Mary Kaye" commenced c. 1990 but was not officially designated "Trans White" until c. Apl 1993. So, I presume all Trans White Basses up to that point would have been "special" finishes.

I think it was discontinued 1994.

So they started doing trans white around 1990, but didn't officially name it until around 1993. Until it was officially named "Trans White", it was referred to as "Mary Kaye White".

Congrats on a beautiful instrument. But since the title of this thread is best Stingray ever, I figured it should actually show the best Stingray ever.

"Mary Kaye White" is just a loose way of referring to any manufacturers Trans White finish. To my knowledge EB's Trans White has always been named just that...ie "Trans White" (Translucent White) and never named Mary Kaye White by EB.

The explanation "Moondog" (Ken) gave above seems pretty accurate.
