It really just boils down to what the 'finisher' wants to draw that day.

To many quilts makes him fall asleep so they do a flame to keep him awake.

OK, I just finish reading the whole thread and went to get two aspirin.
Let me recapitulate: A Tobacco burst is not a sunburst but just a burst and it is not a trans even though it is translucent and you can see the flame wood figuring which is not drawn but a luck of the draw compare to the Quilt, unless it is BFR???
Right?

I'm going to try to define these terms in more general, not necessarily musicman terms...

sunburst: yellow in center going to red, to brown (and sometimes black) moving outward on the guitar.
Vintage Burst: another name that some guitar companies use for sunburst.
Burst: some color in the center with a faded in color at the edge of the guitar (usually black, but can be other colors with other make guitars)
Flame: This is a type of maple wood that makes up the top of the guitar. It looks like stripes going across the guitar somewhat.
Quilt: A type of maple wood that makes up the top of the guitar. It has a wavy look instead of stripes.
Trans: The color applied to the guitar can be seen through. So you see the wood under a trans blue guitar, where a blue painted guitar, you only see blue paint.

Awww c'mon people its simple!

Well, a "regular blue" guitar that is Quilt you can still see through the finish and see the Quilt Figuring underneath(otherwise how would you see the wavy forms) even if it's not Trans, so that's my only questionmark but refrained from post this before because the thread was dieing. Just had to post this nos that you posted that :p
Also replying to Jack's Trans-explenation.

You've got to be kidding, now. Any guitar that you can see the woodgrain through the paint is a trans finish. Just to reiterate, trans=transparent.

My advice for people with learning difficulties or attention deficit disorder:
Order a solid color guitar, that way you'll know what you'll get.

Tanax , your playing with us at this point... Right?

This is why I didn't post.

For a community that you say tolerate no flaming that could get out of hand you guys sure are quite rude and really stupid. Just because you don't explain well enough doesn't mean I'm stupid. Also, if all finishes are Trans, why specifically write it on the Trans Black for instance? Why not just name it Grey Burst Quilt? :p

I don't have any learning difficulties.
And I'm not ordering a BFR, I'm just curious how the naming-conventions on the finishes works.

So 58 posts later, and 51 posts after you were given an easy to understand explanation have you figured it out yet?
