I have Bfr Petrucci with quilt maple top. It have a maple neck so I think:confused: finished with poly. Can I remove finish so it would be only natural maple just like on the silhouette special that i have. I don't like the black poly finish on the bfr neck. Please tell what to do. I will take it to the local guitar builder to remove the finish. When he remove it I need to put some wax on the neck, is it wright?

If I'm not totally mistaken, the neck on your BFR JP6 is made from mahogany, not maple.

One reason why the neck has been finished was that mahogany does not go well with oil&wax finishes.

Also considering the loss in resale value it might be a better idea to get a standard JP6 if you cannot get used to the feel of the finished neck on your BFR.

Just my 2c...
Rock on!

Thank you for the quick answers. Other guitars or changeing the guitar is not the option. These are the spec from the mm site for the bfr petrucci:

Neck Wood:

Maple top - Select maple.
Koa Top - Tobacco Bursted Mahogany.

So if that is true the wax finish it could be done, wright? If it is mahogany neck can I do some other finish so the filling would be smoother and not so silky? Something like on Gibson faded models. They have mahogany neck's but the filing is like it is bare wood.

Thank you!

P.S. It would be nice the BigPopa himself would see this thread. That would be great!

I read that mahogany needs the finish to be strong enough since it is a fairly thin neck and mahogany or very porous. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you!

I think the neck is finished on purpose, so I wouldn't mess with it. I'm quite sure that the Gibby necks have a satin finish on them. Never heard of unfinished mahogany necks out there and the BFR JP neck is made of mahogany. Must be some kind of mistake.

I believe EBMM changed internet servers recently and during the change over some of the product overviews were not updated correctly... Dargin advised this when I raised a similar query the other day.

Pete is 100% spot on.

The high gloss polyester neck finish is provided on those Pet models that feature a select mahogany neck. The Pet models featuring a maple neck are gunstock oil.

Dude, my advice is either leave the neck alone and learn to love it, or sell it and buy a standard JP. I can't see how sanding down the neck and reapplying a finish will make things much better. I'd be worried it would make things worse. Just my opinion.

If you don't like the neck finish, you would probably be better off selling the instrument and buying a standard Petrucci model. Doing any kind of stripping, refinishing or sanding job on the neck is going to slaughter the value of the guitar, and if you don't like the results afterwards you're going to take a big loss if you end up selling it anyway.

You can use a damp green 3M pad to give the neck a satin feel. I've done this on non-EBMM guitars with good results. Your playing hand will buff it back up with repeated playing.

Quote from the Music Man Product page:
"Neck Wood:
Maple top - Mahogany;
Koa Top - Tobacco Bursted Mahogany"

So no matter what top you've got, the neck wood will definitely be mahogany.
If selling the guitar is no option for you and if you don't care to decrease the value of your instrument, then maybe you should try the 3M green pad suggestion mentioned before in this thread.

Gibbies use nitrocellulous lacquer which has a host of issues in and of itself, not the least of which is stickiness when the player has sweaty palms. You can also severely damage a nitro finish if you use the wrong guitar stand / hanger.

I will gladly take the BFR off your hands (pun intended) as a service to you. No need to thank me. I will be happy to suffer with a finished mahogany neck so that you don't have to ;):D

Hmmmm....interesting post. Up until now, the reason I have never considered purchasing a BFR JP is because of the finished neck - and all based on the stickiness of my Gibbie LP. If nitro is what causes the problem, then maybe a BFR JP isn't out of the question.....someday.

bfr neck finish

There is a very cheap easy way to deal with it. Keep a small container of talcum powder in your case. Put a bit on your hands at the start of each set.:D
