Hmmmm....interesting post. Up until now, the reason I have never considered purchasing a BFR JP is because of the finished neck - and all based on the stickiness of my Gibbie LP. If nitro is what causes the problem, then maybe a BFR JP isn't out of the question.....someday.

Mike

The nitro is definitely what does it. My BFR's don't get sticky. And a quick wipe-down after I'm done playing is all it takes to make sure the neck stays clean.

A finished neck doesn't seem to slow Petrucci down. However, as others have posted, using some synthetic steel wool on the back of the neck will give it a satin finish.

The steel wool suggestion just freaks me out. I don't think I could bear to make such a modification to the neck on a BFR Petrucci. It almost seems blasphemous.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely LOVE the feel of an oil/wax neck, but the painted neck isn't so bad that I can't just deal with it.

I think steel wool is a bit savage for what you want and will leave scratches. If you really want to change the feel without ruining the appearance many people swear by micromesh which you can buy from stewmac. Particularly good on nitro necks so I'm not sure how it will behave on your JP. Here's a thread at TGP about it: Question for Scott P on micromeshing necks - The Gear Page

After 20+ years of playing unfinished maple necks I bought a JP BFR despite my concerns due to my dislike of finished necks. I liked the tone much more than the JP6 and figured I'd adjust to the feel. In the end it took me literally 10 minutes to adjust, and just slightly longer to like them more than any unfinished neck I had played.

I've since ordered 2 more and sold my JP6 Rosewood to fund one of them. I think there's a stigma attached to finished necks due to the feel of certain companies finished necks. The BFR neck is as fast and as smooth as any unfinished neck. Regardless of how hot or humid is, or how sweaty my hand is the neck stays fast.

One of the features that brought me to EBMM was the neck on my Axis. I had never felt a neck like that in my 30 years of playing. That Axis was bought on the spot back in 05.

If I ever buy a JP6 BFR, I would learn to adjust to the finished neck. In no way would I sand it or rub it down with steel wool. DON’t do it!
