If you have the opportunity I strongly recommend playing both before making your decision.

Again, I can't really do that. Neither dealer has a BFR axis down here (the Lower Rio Grande Valley area) and I think the next nearest place would be perhaps San Antonio or Austin.

In all seriousness though, would there be a discernible difference in feel between the BFR and regular axis? I thought the only difference was the quality of the woods, mahogany tone block and cosmetics. Would the neck feel the same? Any help you all could give on this would be a godsend.

I haven't played a BFR yet, but I would guess that feel-wise they would be the same as the "regular" Axis. I'm too am under the impression that apart from aesthetics, any discernible difference in the two would be in tone. Everything I've heard is that the Mahogany tone block warms things up a bit, but the Axis is a pretty "warm" guitar anyway...

I'm interested in someone else who actually knows chiming in on this, since I can't recall anyone on this forum here reporting yet on getting a new BFR Axis and doing an A/B comparison.

I think the bottom-line here is that either way, BFR or regular Axis, it's a win-win situation for you. You'd be happy and either would be a tremendous upgrade for you. "Maybe" the BFR would look better...It probably just comes down to what you can afford/what you need for now.

If money is the issue, then as awesome as the BFR's look and all, I agree with the regular Axis and using the extra $$$ towards an amp suggestion as well. There are plenty of really awesome looking "regular" Axis guitars out there.
Having a good guitar with a good amp is both practical AND a luxury (especially if you are gigging)
And it's so hard to stick that "regular" or "normal" tag on a non-BFR Axis anyway... It's such a relative term, as it really is an outstanding guitar. I think you'd be quite enamored with a regular Axis...I am with mine, and look at the BFR as the "luxury/collector" model that would be cool to get some day in the future, if/when I could afford it...

If money isn't the issue and you don't need an amp really bad, I'd treat myself and just go for the BFR right off the bat, then pick up a good amp down the road.

I'm quite happy with my (regular, but still plenty good looking) Axis:

I live in Harlingen... where are you? Don't make the same mistake I did... make sure the store will offer you a refund within a certain time frame, especially if there is a problem. Trust me...

McAllen here. I'm pretty sure that I'm gonna order mine online (either through ebay or a couple of dealers in other states).
