Hi guys, been loving my Reflex 5 HH since 2011, but am finding I would like some well placed single coil action. Is there anyone who can chime in on the tonal similarities and differences between the middle single coil of the big al and Reflex basses?

Much appreciated knuckleheads!

Good question. Had them both a 2011 Big Al 5 SSS and a 2009 25th Ann. 5 HSS (aka Reflex). Really loved the tone of the middle coil on both basses and can not remember a significant difference in the sound. If I am not wrong the preamp should be very similar and the PUs are both Neodym. The Big Al's body wood is mahagony and the 25th Ann's housing a mahagony toneblock (not sure if this is the case with the Reflex). So I'd say: go with your preference for the bass you'd like more. Since you have a Reflex HH I'd go with the Al - which is an incredible bass.

Here's a link to a video showcasing the middle coil of my old Big Al (miss her!):

Would be happy if you'd comment on my vid. Seems nobody does, haha.

I gave it a thumbs up :) and liked the tone 50% rolled off best, nice playing. The Big Al indeed seems a great choise.

From memory of my 25th SSS, I'd say there are more similarities than there are differences tonally but there is a more pronounced difference in the neck carve. I found the 25th/Reflex to have a chunkier/fatter neck back than the Big Al, so just a heads up on that aspect. They both have the same nut width but the Reflex is a 1/16th wider at the last fret which is pretty minor. The BA and a Sterling are similar neck wise. The BA for me is the best kept secret in the line up, I think it would be a great compliment to your HH.
