Here is an example of the private messages that I get and the responses. I have tried time and time again to respectfully ask that people contact customer service instead of me. I will toss this exchange out to the court of public opinion......here is a thread from a guy who is asking me to refinish his evh (at least 11 years old) My response follows and then I get called a punk????? Who is wrong.....

Why on God's green earth, would someone PM you about that?!?! That is so clearly a Q for customer service! Actually, BP, I've always wondered why you even field PMs from forumites. I think your participation on the boards is way more than what ought to be expected from the head honcho of any business.

And name calling has always been a very effective way for me to get people to do things for me that they normally would not do. (Note to NorM - notice the sarcastic comment without use of smiley? - "just hackin' on ya' William!")

uhh... why does my guitar keep going out of tune whenever I hit my drummer over the head with it? and do you know where I can get one of them eddie van whatever guitars people keep talking about on this forum... ?

(... I am obviously kidding by the way. except for the thing about my drummer, but oddly my Axis does always say in tune when it's used as a club... THAT'S quality instrument building, people!)

Perhaps the problem may also lie in that you have a "Customer Service" tag on your forum handle. Possibly changing that to a custom tag might prove to be more effective in limiting the excuses people have for sending you PM's as they may think to themselves "Oh, Big Poppa has a customer service tag, I think maybe if I ask him, he will order his minions of doom to do something for me." Instead, they may seek out the actual CS members or use that thing you push buttons on (or in some cases spin numbers) and give the ol' CS a
call.gif
.

Wow...I'm impressed that you even take the time to reply to those things!

I always thought BP stood for "Big Petrucci fan". Shows what I know....:D

p.s. BP, I just sent you a PM asking if you'll refinish the cabinets in my kitchen. I'm anxiously waiting for your response right now.

This is the guy who was pissed because Henry shut down Romans EB/MM copy shop....I think you should close your PM function. Some people don't/won't listen and think you mean everybody except them when you ask not to be PM'd for customer service stuff etc.

It is enough that you take as much time as you do just being here answering questions, giving sneak peaks etc.

Just my opinion.

I say you just ignore those pm's and use your new found free time to focus on ways to promote the "Weekly Free Ernie Ball Ball Axis Giveaway to the Forumite With 67 posts" contest. ;)

(BTW I entirely agree with Jon. I'm still amazed you post on this forum at all. It certainly show you care enough about your own company to interact with your customers. Class act all the way.)

What an ass... I guess your damned if you do and damed if you don't respond. I thought that guy had been around long enough to know better.

And if I was going to ask the head guy a question that I know is a touchy subject I think I'd do it in proper english and not that damned lazy ass kiddy slang.

Not that anyone would read it, but maybe one of the FAQ's should be a lesson in proper etiquette. Membership in this forum or ownership of guitars does not entitle you to any special treatment. We're all knuckleheads, learn it, live it, love it...

BP I'm sorry to hear you have to be subjected to that sort of attitude seeing how available you make yourself and information about your company.

Some people just can't be happy with the keys to the kingdom.

Sterling,

You know first hand the entitlement mindset that is rampant these days.. especially in online communications where one can behave like a child with relative anonymity.

I'd issue a canned response to unwelcome PMs.. one that says,

"Sorry, private messaging has been disabled in this user's profile settings."

Either that, or just turn off your PM's permanently. Surely you have an email address that you can hand out to people that you want to talk to.
(like NorM, kbaim and myself.... )

Guys there are times when I am working on something that entails a forumite....thats why I keep it on.

Thanks for your support and hopefully the next few months will be a little less crazy.

What a jerk-off. You don't have to be around this forum that long to know the answer to the question the moron had. That "kiddy slang" as it was called gets old, shows no respect, and I for one can't stand it. It actually makes me wonder if you are intelligent enough to have bought that EVH guitar---maybe it's stolen????

Grow up, take some English classes, use the search function, and stop bugging the owner. BP, you might have to turn off your PMs, although it would be interesting to read some of the crap you have to sift through on your PMs (at least for one day---that's all we could probably take).

idea

Big Poppa,

Why not have CodeMonkey make a web form that can be used to contact you? (Something like www.ernieball.com/talk2poppa)
The form could include a password that is required for the message to be successfully sent to you.

Then, the password can be changed on a regular basis or something so that nobody gets carte blanche. If you need to be in contact with a forumite at various intervals, you can send the 'current' password via PM.

(I believe you can still send PM's even if yours are turned off. )

Just one idea.
