BP, you're right. Somehow we've lost perspective, maybe because the bigger issues are too big and too hard to fix. Music, and your guitars give us a welcome break from those big, nasty issues that we can't quite get a handle on. Is music more important than health care, the huge budget defecits and the near-depression we're just starting to crawl out of? No way - they're not more important, but they are a hell of a lot more fun. I say that as someone who has played guitar for over 25 years and loves it. But I get up and go to work every day to support my family. And these big issues are the ones that will make us or break us.

I hope Music-Man keeps doing what they're doing, cause they are great people building great instruments. As far as guitar players, listen to what you like, and listen to (and play with) people better than you so you can keep on learning. That's the name of the game.

Peace in the new year!

Don

Bashing people's playing is something I left behind in high school along with the "I'm a better guitarist" ego.

Man, anyone who gets up in front of a crowd and plays gets my respect. Anyone that can make a career out of it, my admiration.

Why label someone a guitarist when they sing, write and play? Realize that's a totally different thing than being a sideman or a studio guy.

Most guys would kill for an ounce of talent and good fortune like that.

+1 Again.

Anyone who can keep the
GUITAR
in front of big audiences and potentially inspire anyone to pick up an actual guitar is OK in my book.
JM, Taylor Swift, any number of Jonases, whoever.
I don't have to like them to hope that they get people interested in playing an actual guitar as opposed to the epic waste of time that is Guitar Hero.

The one thing folks seem to forget when posting on internet forums: opinions are like asses, everyone's got one.

The other thing folks seem to forget, and this is a big one: you should probably never write something about someone you wouldn't directly say to them to their face.

If we can all keep that perspective and be respectful, it will make this forum a better place.

That said, John Mayer is a hero to me. I love his music and his skill as a player. He is a tone freak. I admire the fact that he actually has tried many different things to get the sound he has. His roots are with SRV. He started in coffee houses and worked his way up to huge concerts. He obviously loves what he's doing.

The man is a powerhouse of talent. Not only can the guy write hooks, great lyrics and play guitar, but he also builds effect pedals every now and then, he's a fantastic graphic designer, and is heavy into photography and video as well. The guy had his hand in just about every aspect of creating his latest album.

I understand that there are folks that might not like Mr. Mayer's music, but honestly, no one should NOT like him for who he dated, or who he sang with, or what Rolling Stone said about him, or because he keeps winning grammys.

We are all guitar players. We can all learn from every style of music that's out there and every player. At least that's how I've always felt.

Dude, why do you think we even care?
We all have our opinion of Ed. Sure I love and hate the guy to some extent. Personally the Ed I keep in my head is him in his prime and sure I perhaps don't agree with his business practices but... its business. Its a dog eat dog world for the most part. It's also HIS business and Sterling's business...not ours.

that sums it up great. Couldn't have said it better. We did get a really cool line of guitars out of it, the AXis is great, other than that, none of our business.

I know one thing - the first time I ever tried to teach a Mayer song to a student I was blown away at how he can play some of this stuff AND sing at the same time. It's not easy at all and it's second nature to him. It's not quite the same thing, but it reminds me of people like Ron Thal who can play any complex rhythmic idea and sing something completely different over it. My hat is off to JM for sure. Impressive performer.

I've been trying for a long time to play "Why Georgia" and "Neon". The guy has really large hands. I thought that the smaller neck of an EBMM would help me to compensate. It helps a little but still... some of those voicings he uses are tough. Lots of thumb and long stretches.

I end up having to compensate by using some different fingering to get the same sound. I won't even attempt to sing and play at the same time when it comes to his stuff. Too busy trying to get the fingering of the notes correct!

I remember when I made the decision to not sing and just play guitar instead.

In listening to Mayer songs I think to myself "That guitar part is not that difficult." Then by the time the song is finished I find myself saying "That guy just put together a really cool song."

Then when I hear he's hanging out with the likes of BP.

I reflect back to when I heard Luke say. "It's all about the hang."

I have to believe that's so true. If Luke wasn't fun to hang with in the studio there's no way he would have been asked back time and time and time again. It wouldn't matter if he was as good as ..... (Which he really is by the way. At least in my humble opinion. Cheese, that guy just defined music on FM radio.)

Cool enough to hang with Sterling is just about the highest praise I can think of.
I really liked the idea of Paul McCartney playing Musicman guitars and basses.

I am a JM fan, and like him more and more everyday.

Initially, and still sometimes I find him a tad odd. But the fact of the matter like him or not, he's got your attention and so many others. I've seen endless battles of over him on so many forums regarding his worthiness as an artist.

Do I think he's a guitar God? Of course not. Is he the best singer? No again.
He's a package deal! He's a got a formula and it's working for him big time! If that weren't true, then we wouldn't be talking about him. In the end JM is a good business man who understands all the little things of the business. He's conservatively fashion conscious, funny sense of humour, he's photogenic, he writes good lyrics, good hooks and catchy songs. He's a tasteful player. He knows how to work the media to his advantage, even if that means if that means dating A list women.
He's done duets with other A list musicians, made friends with them and the right people too.

I think he's great for the industry. Especially the blues. He may not be original, but he does know how to repackage all the favourites like Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy & SRV. That alone makes me love hearing his music. I enjoy dissecting the music trying to find the licks he's borrowed, and tones he's using.

I think so many people, ESPECIALLY GUITARISTS are JEALOUS of him plain and simple. John makes it look easy in my opinion and it drives so many people crazy! Maybe they're technically better able on the guitar than John? Who knows. Maybe they just want a Dumble? But like I say, he's a package deal and I think he's here to stay.
I personally am really looking forward to what John will be doing years from now as he evolves as an artist.

That's my 2 cents.

Stray...Look at it this way...there is a heart throb major media figure that plays guitar..... The funny thing is much like Guitar Hero John Mayer has introduced the concept of playing the guitar to many who may not have otherwise.

Yeah, that would be me then...

I need to include a disclaimer every time I post, along the lines of me not actually being serious....

Yep. I've seen this in other forums as well. Sounds crazy, but that's the only rationale I can think of that would drive such hatred toward a fellow musician. Plain silly. I doubt any of those folks who diss him would ever say it to his face if they had a chance.

John Mayer has what 99.99% of all other guitar players lack (myself included) - true musicianship. Touch, timing and tone. Those 3 things are critical to quality music and is often missing in a lot of players.

I'm far from a true musician, I'm more of a guitar enthusiast. Too many hobby/amateur players miss the point when it comes to real players like Mayer. It's not always all about technique, flash or over-complicated songs...it's about making music. I admire and envy guys like John Mayer who have that kind of talent.

Well said!
