OK the Corgan was according to Luke a off the cuff and what should have been off the record quote. To this day it comes back from time to time to haunt Luke as he really never means to slag any artist. You know who held it against Luke forever (probably still) John Mayer! He was a young kid reading that and a fan of Corgin and really was just gutted by the quote.

Interesting, I never heard about Luke saying that, though I can see why. Billy Corgan is an awful guitar player. But I have to stand by John Mayer on this one -- Billy Corgan is eleventy billion times more inventive than most other guitar players. He always had vision and drive to present rock music and specifically the guitar as an instrument in a completely new way, and I really think he succeeded. Some people can't get by his squeely voice or bald head or lack of soloing chops, but he has created sounds and songs that "real players" never could. Actually, BC has repeatedly railed against "guitar players" with chops as people who "do it by the book" so to speak and fail to think outside the box, riff-rockers who just re-hash the same old Zepp riffs over and over. I tend to agree with him a lot here, though I like to fall somewhere in the middle -- I think it is best to be super inventive in a non technical sense but still have some decent chops to be inventive from that angle as well... Gotta be well-rounded.

I honestly think a lot of guitar players could stand to learn a thing or two from Billy Corgan.

But I can't fault Luke for the quote -- speaking his mind when I'm sure he thought he was off the record.

Hmmm....first heard of JM on Clapton's Crossroads concert shown on PBS a while back. Played some great SRV blues solo and then one his songs. Thought he was a good player although he was dressed like we used to back in the eighties.....preppie look. I still have not gotten into his music but I do respect his talent.

So what I'm getting is that straycat doesn't like JM, and that he thinks he sounds like Dave Matthews.

No need to justify why you like or don't like somebody's music, that's just personal preference. But surely you see why he's an icon and popular?

As for Billy Corgan, too bad about that Luke comment. We all say a lot of **** we don't mean too ... thank god nobody's running around quoting me. I'm a huge Pumpkins fan btw. Man did those first two albums blow me away.

Glad I'm not the only one! First two, though? My big one is MCIS. One of the best albums ever.
We're into hijack territory ... but I wasn't that into MCIS. Gish is great, Siamese Dream is one of my desert island albums. Huge. Just personal preference.

Sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised with what I discover when I let my ears listen and turn off the images, tabloid/hollywood reports, and artists history.

Mandy Moore came out with an album this year called Amanda Leigh and it quickly became a favorite of mine. Great melodies and guitar parts played by Mike Viola. I never thought I'd say I liked a Mandy Moore album, but never say never right?

I think we can all learn something from just about any musician. Sometimes we just have to close our eyes to everything and just listen with an open mind.

The original poster wanted to know what we think about John Mayer. Well, I think he's great. Sure, I love a lot of what s/he might call "great" guitarists. I sill like John Mayer. I like Taylor Swift too, but that's beside the point.

I always thought that most people didn't give Mayer enough credit for actually being a really good guitar player. I thought people focused mostly on the hits, his women, etc., but the guy can play. Okay, it may not be ground-breaking, but much of what he does is not easy--not to me anyway. I would be really happy with myself if I could play some of that stuff.

I would be really happy with myself if I could write the songs he does, play the way he plays, do graphic design the way he does, and be as articulate as he. As others have said, he's a total package. I'm planning to see his show with some friends when he rolls into town in February, and just for fun, maybe I'll show up wearing a Dream Theater or John Petrucci shirt. :)

Here's hopin' he'll be playing it live on stage. It would be a thrill to see. Kinda like seeing Orianthi playing one at the MJ tribute.

I just wish he'd make it down here to Hawaii for a concert!

OK Let me state this one more time. I do not dislike John Mayer I repeatedly said I think the guy is an amazing artist and writer the only thing I said was I do not believe he is a great guitar player and when I say GREAT I mean guys who are in that 1% bracket of being from another planet, and when you think of how many millions of people who play guitar, it is a very small club. But I enjoy his music, I mean I here people rag on his voice I really like the tone of his voice as it is unique. Why is it that three other guitar players who are close in age to him Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa and Kenny Wayne Sheppard could be mentioned on any forum and there is not a peep, yet when Mayer comes up it is like a nuke has been launched and he outsells the other three guys combined.lol I think Mayer is a fine artist there was not a doubt about that.

As far as the comment that Luke stated about Billy Corgan, who had a band that had a sound all its own. I stated it was during the heart of Grunge and all the guitar magazines turned there backs on the truly amazing players to put guys like Buzz from the Melvins on the cover(if anyone is offended by that one you are going to have to handle it)and do ten lessons on how to drop your low E string to D and a lot of guys were not happy. So if Luke spoke up during that time and had an of the record comment published that is just wrong. But then again when you have credentials like Lukather, which if you really know them are just mind boggling I doubt he is losing any sleep.

Big Poppa are you referring to that guy who plays with Dwight Yoakem, wow that takes a lot of balls to say. Albert Lee besides seeming to be one of the nicest guys you could ever meet is one of the greatest players that I have ever seen or heard, and is another guy who has a body of work that is off the chart .How that guy could say something like that makes no sense at all, I have never heard or read an interview by a country player where Albert Lee was never mentioned as a major influence. I bet a lot of the guys especially the younger ones on the forum might not even know he is English and was in that same circle growing up as Beck, Page and Clapton (whatever was in that water they should of bottled it). Except he took a country direction instead of a blues or rock one. He and James Burton are by far two of my favorite players.

A really controversial figure among guitar players, JM. So much love and hate, and I wonder if he could care less. At least I'd like to think he doesn't. I thought he was genuinely hip before he made mainstream, and now he's totally chic as well as hip. I mean, the guy's got it all. No wonder people hate him.

straycat - I certainly here what your saying about JM not being the most stratospheric guitarist, but what is the standard by which guitarists are to be judged? I don't think there is one, and in that case JM's prowess of the guitar could very well put him in iconic circles in the minds of many. I know, I have been totally blown away by some guitarists/artists that play in their own style; some of which is very slow or patient and deliberate with really great touch and sensitivity and not necessarily loud. Alot of what I have found to be really really superb guitar playing might seem elementary or non-challenging to other folks. I do think that we, as guitar players, have a little more insight into complexity, difficulty, style, finesse/touch, etc. For instance, there are certain songs that Satriani has produced that have really moved me, and they weren't the ones you would expect. I think Mayers technical guitar ability is held in high esteem in the business and by other players, or he wouldn't be where he is today.

And I'd like to take back my comment in the other thread, it appears you have been around a block or two. :)
