Off Topic Big Poppa's amplification

Hi!

Sorry to start a new thread for this, couldn't find it anywhere.

I've gathered that he uses Markbass, this kinda tipped me off, along with him praising the company...

The reason I'm asking, is that I'm digging the bass tone in these clips:

It's likely that half (give or take) of it is Bongo goodness. I'm working on that half.

So what amps and cabs does he use? Does anyone know? BP?

Is that a Jeff Berlin 151P I spy back there? Standard 104HR ext. cab?

It is whatever Guitar Center had.... pretty much set flat. I love mark Bass stuff as you know Bongo pretty flat with a little highs rolled down

I dig this, I really do.

Markbass aside, this is the best sample of a single H Bongo I've heard so far and it shines! That said, the track is worth replaying and just listening to the music instead of analyzing how the instruments or amps sound. Thumbs up!

I am looking for another 25th and I have a 20th SR 5 H coming in the next week or 2! I ONLY play Balls now and like it that way! Still waiting for the announcement on the Game changer and waiting to see when you guys do a Natural Classic...LOTs of Balls seem to be in my future!

BP, that's an awesome bass tone and performance!

Just one more proof that single H from EBMM factory and good wood work are all that any bass player need!
Of course, as one of this Forum members said, ...it's all in fingers too...

P.S. ...those two "loony" guitar players I don't even wanna mention... great guitarists indeed!

It is pressure....serious pressure. IM not scared but it is challenging to work behind a desk and then play video clinics in a room full of players with black t shirts and their arms folded with the expression of "i can do that"with these guys. The gigs that I can relax on are the fun private ones with Luke Albert JP and Steve and the latest with Johnny Hiland and Joe Bonamassa... These are not particularly enjoyable for me. Remember if I get to play live three times a year it is a ;world tour for me. Also for the people who bash my playing on various forums and point out that I dont belong. They are right..but as Ive said the players demand that I play. They love to bond and share. Steve Morse in those videos is an example...The are sort of proud that I dont back down. I also would love to hear the critics play in that situation. Remember Im 55 and last played regularly was about 25 years ago. im old! It's funny with age there are things that I cannot do but things and approaches that I actually do better but all in all I had way way more chops years ago. Some of the clams I play is that my mind thinking of lines in a solo but it forgets my fingers have to do it. I'm OK with all of it.

Actually Im going to Decatur Alabama do play a bbq contest with Johnny later in the year.

You know, its funny, I don't know how to say this without coming across as pandering, but that first video (I haven't listened to the second yet) is how I hope to sound tone and note choice wise when I play. Thick, burpy supportive bass lines that are rich in content if you listen but nonobtrusive if you don't.

I'm really surprised people are knocking your playing, I have no criticisms of it. You should be proud of it.

It was something like that in language, you're allowed to express yourself, no matter how bad you are. When you're a toddler, you (try to) speak all the time, and you get to speak with people who are far more experienced and a lot better at it than you are. That's really the way it should be with music as well, because that's the way you learn and grow. When you interact with someone who's better than you, you become better yourself.

Good point. Yeah, VW's whole take on the music/language connection is genuine, too - not just lip service to a "cool idea" - because he was literally learning to play bass/music with this brothers at the same age that he was learning to talk .. 2 and 3 years old. Interesting case, cognitively/linguistically/musically, whatever ...

NO its a public gig Its the Decatur Bbq contest or riverfest or something like that...Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibsons is a master world champion BBQ chef who lives in Decatur and heard Johnny Hiland at the Casey Lee Ball event and hired him to come and Johnny and bear very graciously invited me to sit in for that gig.

Word. This is, in my opinion, the most efficient way to learn, no matter what field of endeavor we're talking about. Throw yourself into the fire, feel the humiliation and respect, then feel the desire and motivation.
