How about a “magnetized” version of the metal cover for the battery compartment? It gives you the old school look, new school innovation and no screwdriver necessary.

How about a mini slat compartment for the battery cover? Kinda like the roll top librarian desks, but on a much smaller scale? To open you just slide the top open and it rolls around the bottom of the battery pack. Maybe a hard wood like black locust could be used.

ESP uses a flip cover that works well. I'm not suggesting EB change anything (I love the chrome cover) just showing that there are plenty of good options out there.

Not at all. My Dingwall had a battery compartment like that. It was the thing I liked most about it. Which is why it is no longer around. Oh, and the color was cool.
