...to the forum today.

There have been a couple of threads commenting on the cost of LE BD and 20th SR5, compared to the standard bass.

I really think that is missing the point. These are exceptional instruments in standard form. A whole lot of time and care goes into building them. The upgrades give average Joes like you and I a chance to own something extra special. Let's just be thankful for such a great company giving us that chance, and not concentrate on a few hundred dollars. You can't take it with you, anyway, so spend it while you can.

Not to mention that if you compare them (even the standard EB basses) to similar basses from other high end companies, you are actually getting quite a bargain.

Hey...... If people want the '' Special '' basses, they gotta pay the '' Special '' prices.
Either suck it up and pull out the Cash/CheckbooK/Credit Card, or sit back, complain and do without while everyone else enjoys their bass thats
'' worth every penny '' to them.

Negative?

Don't think so.

My BD post was to pass along the reason, as explained to me, for the significantly larger upcharge this year. BP was good enough to expand on it.

No complaint at all, either expressed or implied. Please don't read into it things that were not said.

I'm darned glad I'll be able to score one.

Hey, adouglas, I don't want to get in an internet fight with you, but your post did come across as a bit complaining. Not just you though, the other thread on the 20th SR5 price was in a similar vein. I accept that you did not mean it that way, but that's the way it came across as.

lets be nice guys...

i understand where both of you are coming from.

here's how i see it... if you want it and the price makes sense, buy it. if you dont like it or it costs too much then don't pretty simple. its like everything else in the open market.

MM doesnt has to justify their pricing to anyone. they're a private business and a successful one at that... they know what theyre doing and no matter how many forums we read or how much we scour ebay they know where to price their gear way better than us. if they bust out with a rediculous price then sales will suffer - so its in their best interest to "price it right".

ive said this before in situations where people say stuff like "hey dargin you guys should do xxx" or "hey BP, why dont you yyyy"... im not accusing anyone (this is a general comment)... if you're gonna keep one thng on your mind while posting here it should be this: "dont tell pops how to run his show". that should probabaly include any comments that sound like or may come off as telling Pops how to run his business.

again... im not taking side. consider this a public service announcement.

I've read the threads here on the bass side and haven't seen much in the way of negative comments except "I don't have any money!"

Brian, people are going to talk about pricing on the instruments because there are so many new things and hardly anyone is quite sure where the price point is. And, on the BFRs, the MSRP is probably a shock to those who are accustomed to the 'regular' MM pricing....although it does seem that most if not all are beginning to understand where the price comes from and that it's worth it if you can swing it.

Thanks for keeping an eye on it, though. I appreciate how self-policing you guys generally are.

I started the thread about the 20th SR5 vs. the standard SR5.

I don't think the initial post was negative in any way. As a newbie to MM basses, I simply asked the knowledgeable folks on this board if it is worth the extra thousand bucks (not a few hundred) for the 20th. Also, I wanted to confirm that that $$$ difference seemed accurate as the shop that I got a quote from seemed clueless. Fair questions IMO.

To many people it is worth the extra cash and to me it isn't. To each his own. I have 2 MM basses and love them. I am in the market for my first fretless and as a player, I will buy a standard SR5 as it will be played quite a bit.

It will be a new MM in any case as I have kicked that lousy Fender and Gibson habit for good!;)

BTW... I went through the same thought process with my Les Pauls and ended up buying lower end Studio and Special models as I couldn't justify the huge price difference to step up to a reissue or high end Standard.

I thought that anyone who paid a preimum for a 30th Anniversary Stingray was a fool. Until I played one. And had to buy it. There is a reason why they cost more, it turns out.

Ok Dokey,

Im suprised that some of you are suprised.....But that isnt a suprise either

When you look at retail price please understand that we dont get all of that money.....Consider the street price is 30% off so a 500 upcharge is actually a 350 upcharge
from there the dealer has to make his cut and then we get ours Without violating confidential dealer prices you can figure that we are not getting rich on these things. Also please feel free to compare our retail prices to the competition for a like axe...we are 40% less in some cases.

I do think that the posts were entitled in tone and I would have hoped that regulars could divide by three and see if what we are getting is truly worth it for us.

P.S> The G and G Case costs US $40.00 more than the SKB

Great point. I was making my initial point completely based on aesthetics and features.

Might make sense for me to actually pick one of these up at a store and play it! Anyone know of a Toronto area dealer that has these on order?

I am also guilty of going to talkbass when drunk.

I wind them all up by saying that Michael Manring, Jaco and Marcus Miller are/were rubbish. that really gets them going.

I just got my 30th SR4 today. I paid around 60% of the list price so I got quite a deal. It's actually slightly less than the list price of a standard SR4 with all that lovely mahogany growl. Woohoo.

I have a nice size wine collection and frequent a couple of the big wine related boards. You think talkbass has lots of drinking and typing? Check out a site dedicated just to booze!
