Hi folks,

I'd like to test how my Bongo 4 works with a BEAD tuning. I like to play 4 string basses.

I'm not sure what size of the B string would work well.

Has anyone a recommendation?

Thank you.

Get your self a 5string set of EB regular slinkys an use four of them
130-100-80-65.
Got a set myself as am planning on trying the same thing at some point on my Stingray, just building up to doing it as it will involve intonation an trus rod tweaks to get it playing as it should, plus the nut might need filing to accommodate the over sized gages so if you end up not liking it after you have bent the bass around the change.....
Failing that ill just hang onto the strings an get a fiver !!!!!
Let us no how you get on with it !

You're going to have to widen the nut slots before putting bigger strings on there. Otherwise, you're likely to break the nut.

I have my bongo 4 and my sr4 both BEAD.

File the nut...

and on the Bongo you may have to file out the string hole on the bridge, depending on what gauge strings you used. Barely fit with EB super slinkies. Just recently went to Chromes, and They wouldn't fit, so I had to file away.

I've used Chromes/EB Flats on every Bongo I've owned and I've never had to take a file to a bridge hole. And, that includes B strings.

did you string BEAD?

Just curious. I actually called SLO and talked to someone (forgot who) because the chromes wouldn't fit that way. He said he had done the same, and had to file the bridge hole. That was the only reason I went forward with it. I don't know if 4 bangers have smaller bridge holes than 5'ers do, as I don't own one, but I have to assume they do. The .125 super slinkie barely fit. The .132 Chrome, with the added blue wrapping did NOT fit in my bongo.

I'll try it with a set of Elixir strings, the Slinkys are to rough for me and also the tension is a bit low for my needs. With Elixirs I'm able to get a lower action. I'm not sure if I go with 65-85-105-125 or 60-75-95-125. I'll keep you informed.

I hear you on that. I recently installed Chromes on my 5-string and the B-string wouldn't fit thru my bridge hole either (diff. brand than MM). So I unwrapped most of the blue wrapping at the ball end, and with some elbow grease, got it to fit. May be tight getting out, but I expect to keep the chromes on this one for a while.

Maybe the 4 string bridge has smaller holes. Interesting. When I strung up the 5 string, I had to give the B string an extra hard tug to get it through, but that was it.

I had a BEAD tuning with a .130 through a badassII bridge on a JB.. with a bit of power it went through but it was not a good setup. I sold the JB so I cannot compare anymore to the Bongo bridge.

YiPPiEH YEAH Chuck :D

it took me a long way through for getting here to the temple of the best sounding basses of the world. I'm as happy as one can be with the Bongo, fantastic instrument bro. :p:)
