Hi,

New member here. I'm also a new Bongo owner.

I've been trying to find out some information on the Bongo's compensated nut. Is it a Buzz Feiten, Earvana, or some proprietary design? Is there a specific chart of offsets or temperment that should be used when tuning and intonating a Bongo? Anything else that I should know?

Thanks for the help!

hey buddy, welcome to the forums

so, im pretty sure that ive read here that the comp. nut was desined by the EB engineers. there's been a few threads about it so use the search tool up top or go here: http://www.ernieball.com/forums/search.php? and you should find more info on that.

congrats on the new bass dude ... and as far as "anything else [you] should know" ... ya, you'll probably buy a few more Ernire Balls basses. seems like one if never really enough :)

Hahahahaha! I knew you'd have my ass! :D

In all actuality, I did this one on trade, and it involved amps, so I knew you wouldn't be interested. When money changes hands, it will be with you my friend - I promise.

We need to get together, so I'll give you a call tomorrow.

Thanks for the welcome!

I tried the search thingy, but to no avail. Maybe I didn't put in the right keywords.....sorry.

If all of the Ernie Ball instruments rock like this Bongo, you can bet that I'll be purchasing more in the future! I know just who to go to.....

I can probably dig up the compensated nut thread, lemme have a go at it.

I cut and paste herewith:

Compensating the nut takes care of the intonation toward the nut end of the instrument, and intonating the bridge takes care of the bridge end. I did a pretty thorough study, and found that intonation gets pretty screwy, the closer to the bridge that you get.

If you use the 19th fret, you should get better intonation on the high notes. Using the 19th fret has a lot more to do with the fact that it's a 24-fret instrument, than that it has a compensated nut. If you intonate using the 12th fret, you get pretty bad intonation at the 24th.

Without getting really tricky with the fretwork, it's impossible to intonate the entire instrument perfectly (and I'm not entirely sure that you'd want to). Since most people will probably be playing chords up high on the neck, it makes sense for the bass to be intonated there.

That's what I got. You need more info? I can try.

I am all about making you guys happy.

It's my life.

the choking a little,
Jack

Yes, the Music Man Compensated Nut was designed by none other than Dudley and BP. It is far superior to those other names that you mentioned...

Thanks for digging up that info.

I guess maybe I'm confused. With the other types of compensated nuts, you have to tune to a proprietary temperment to get good intonation throughout the range of the instrument. Is that not required on the Bongo's system?

For example, check this thread out on the Peterson Tuners forum - LINK The real info starts about 4 posts down. I'm expecting to have to do something similar with my Bongo.

Anyone know for sure what the deal is?

Thanks again!

I think that the 100% CORRECT/COMPLETE answer should come from the man who took part in designing the nuts (Dudley). However, I will let you know that we intonate the instruments at the 12 fret.

Also, the Music Man Compensated Nut was designed to work with standard tunings, for many reasons, but one of the reasons was because that's how 99% of the world tunes/intonates thier guitars/basses, and it's the most "user friendly."

Disclaimer: "99% of the world " is not an official statistic :)

I intonate at the 12th too because I never get much above the 5th fret anyway.

So, when will Dudley be here? I'm saving him a window seat.

Dudley is right on the edge, I can feel it.

He's teetering. "Do I just slip in? And just comment quickly on the compensated nut issue? I could do that and not get dragged in like BP and Steve Lukather and Beth."

Come on, Dudley. I can FEEL your need.
