Hi guys,
I, like a lot of bassists have been lusting after a stingray for ages, and suddenly, whats this?? A new 'Bongo' contraption? Is this bass any good for funk, i.e. does it have that Stingray tone?? i dont want to buy a stingray and then be forced to buy a bongo too!! the cash just wont allow it.
Cheers,
JJ

Welcome to the forum. There's lots of info here. Both the Stingray and the Bongo are excellent basses. You won't go wrong with either one of them. Use the search function to find out more.

Bovine, Lord of Bongo will surely pay you a visit and try to sway take you over to the Bongo side, but when pressed he will admit that the good old Stingray is also a great bass.

I can get a good StingRay tone out of my Bongo 5 H/SC. PLUS I can get a ton of other tones too. I love the StingRay tone, but overall IMHO the Bongo is much more versatile. The 4-band tone controls coupled with 18 volt circuitry allow for a lot of variety. If I could only own one bass, it would be a Bongo.

And oh yes - it def is a "Mother-Funker" (Can I say that?!?) I play a bit of slap and I like the tone so much that it replaced my Ken Smith BT5G as my main bass (And a lot of the funky black gospel bass players play Smith's)

I think it would be nice if they would build Sting Rays with optional Bongo electronics. You guys rave on about the great sound, but I just can't get on board with the looks.

ahh a noob

well i think that you will be around enough bongo adicts that the looks actually look awsome after the first month

all will be swayed to the sterling/ bongo side

It's all true. The look just grows on you. Also, if anything, play one. That turn anyone into a believe. And as for slap? Well I've only had my for a few days, and have only gotten a few hours of personal time with it due to all my stupid work. I'll say this, the neck H will take definite getting used to, but judging by the tones it can produce with light fingering... It'll be a force to be reckoned with.

I think the look of the Bongo is a GOOD reason to buy it. Who wants to look like everyone else? We already have guitar players for that . Bassists should clear our own paths!

Well, I thought that comment might garner some negative reactions. Oh well, I prefer a classic look. To each his own. Even if the Bongo looks "awsome".

Most folks that play a Bongo has heard so much fun poked at the style of the Bongo they are pretty thick skinned now days. As more and more are showing up in recording I do believe the Bongo is the bass of the future here. That is EB future. I imagine they will still produce the rays for those that prefer them too.

I wasn't really trying to poke fun at them, sorry if it came off that way. Must happen a lot, judging by the knee-jerk defensive reactions. I personally would rather have a more traditionally styled instrument, that's all.

I can totally see where a more traditionally styled instrument becomes uber handy. For the jazz bands I'll play around with for instance, I wouldn't bring my Bongo, for the reason that I don't think Jazz deserves a Bongo, and that it's just way too out there. Obviously I'm not the only one that thinks so, but aesthetics do matter. I even decided if I get drafted into the jazz quartet I'll make sure to put a black PG on my white SUB so it has more of a tuxedo-esque look.

Also, with the SR5 I Will own someday. It's a five string, and has a bit more of that tight sort of look. My rule of thumb is 'smaller, tighter basses hang high, bigger chunkier basses ride low' Though that's ofte getting tripped up because I enjoy the feeling of playing down low. And sometime's for complete randomness I'll play up high like I started off. I'm still not sure about my Bongo but that just throws back to it's wildness...
