No one will believe this, but out of my dozen or so basses I've owned, I never had a paint chip on the HS. If it's a Ric, or a Bongo, you're going to get a mark or chip if you bang it against something hard. If you love your bass, be careful with it. If you love it, but don't care about the damage, fine. Just don't pass it off as mojo when you try to sell it.:D
I'm off my soap box now.:)

Does E.B. sell touch up paint?
I don't know, but it's a good idea. I called about having an SR5 HS repainted that I was thinking of purchasing (unwanted mojo right?) and it was very expensive, and the person on the phone seemed a little surprised, as if the question doesn't get asked too often, which is probably the case.

There is no such thing as mojo. Only neglect.

This have been discussed here before. Some say that basswood, being a softer wood, is more susceptible to dings. And some say the oposite. But it might be that there are some truth in this. I don´t know.....

Basswood Bongo

//J

The necks aren't made out of basswood. They're made out of maple.

I've been banging my Bongos into things for about 4 years now. And, they go to gigs in a double gigbag--not cases. And, not one of the bodies has a chip of paint missing. The necks have some dings, but those are my fault.

The pointy headstock on the Bongo, if you use it like it was intended, won't chip when poking the guitarist and occasionally the singer :)

Hilarious!

My Bongo is black, so I guess a black Sharpie's a really good idea, but I like the idea of a flat black paint pen even better - thanks bradfordws!

uuuuuuuuugggghhhhh arrrrrghhhhh Im soory but the paint doesnt fall off....its paint and when you band it into something is chips just like your car your wifes nailpolish....It is =more noticeable when the neck is painted and maybe the bongo being longer is a problem but when someone dings the bass it isnt the basses fault...I think qwe all know this now my arrrrgh and uuuuuugh is that when these threads get experts that recycle old controversial threads of bull puckiy like bass wood finised instruments ding easily i get a little cranky!

dings is nothin'

try getting Jiffy Marker off the Mona Lisa!! now that's a task and a half! :D

again, in all seriousness, paint chips when hit. still not sure why it's an issue. instruments get more use than a Democrat or Republican spin doctor's thesaurus! it's bound to get knocked around a little.

Having owned a large number of basses over the years, I would agree that the pointy bits on any bass tend to lose paint much easier than the rounded bits. I don't have any headstock chips on my Bongos yet, but the pointy bits on the Thunderbirds I've owned, as well as an Ibanez Iceman and a Gene Simmons Punisher all chipped in those place without any particular abuse.

Anyone who associates headstock dings with basswood is conveniently forgetting that the neck isn't basswood.

Ah the 80's. Remember all of the pointy-necked Jackson and Chavel guitars? I never saw one with an un-chipped tip, at least on any instrument that actually got used.

The "expert" wants to apologize for getting you cranky, sire. I suspect that it´s me you are refering to since I linked to that other thread. I can also inform you that I´m about to order a Bongo 5. Played one for the first time some weeks ago. Fantastic instrument indeed. I will put flats on it. And I don´t care if it get dings. Instruments are working tools and it´s hardly impossibly to do gigs witout smashing into things on occation.

But it is not really a secret that basswood is a soft wood and softer woods tend to get dings easier. And I personally don´t care about this as long as it´s a great instrument that sound good and feels good. But I didn´t know that a Bongo has a maple neck. Makes sence thou.....

I have an 80s Charvel/Jackson Model 7 tele and the point on the headstock is chipped a little bit...nature of the beast when people don't watch what the **** they're doing ;)

Paint chip? bah humbug - I have pieces of the headstock missing on my Les Paul.

Luckily the h'stock didn't snap off!

- twas in the daze of lottsa gigging and it fell off its perch a few times.

A touch up with a sharpie or as Mr Peters says - nail varnish, can hide a multitude of sins.

oy yeah I just remembered ... ... my ol' bass player still reminds of the time I knocked over his P bass just daze after he had got it. ooops.

I demand full credit for this, and I am guessing you will get a 5 HH, right?

Yepp. Your fault. Definately. Fy faan för dig!! ;) And a HH is right on the spot. GREAT sounding instrument, indeed. Don´t know what color tho. Any suggestions, folks??

Aggie got the first headstock ding over not having the bubble wrap holding from movement in the case.

Then another cuz of serious gigging and not paying attention to where I was on the stage.

Still sounds awesome and no harm no foul. It just changed my gotta keep a bass pristine to enjoy it attitude.

Most likely the thing that helped me most in playing too. :)

My #1 player 4HH, bought new from Musician's Friend right after the Bongos came out has no headstock chips. Shiny neck and body dings, yes. Needs a third output jack replacement, perhaps. The best bass I've ever played in my life, yes.

Hmm - The body on my almost 3 year old Stealth HH looks like new, and I gig once a week. The headstock on the other hand........well let's just say I play in close quarters, and it's met up with the PA speakers a few times....... Definitely user error, not a manufacturing issue.

But I have to quote my sister on this one........it's still "one bad-ass lookin' bass!"
