Contemplating buying a 4-string Bongo and have only had the opportunity to play an HH model. Just looking for some feedback on the sound differences between the HH, HS and H pickup configurations. Any input would be appreciated.

Try a search. Plenty has been discussed and would be enlightening reading. In the meantime, to tide you over:

1. HH is godzilla
2. HS in Hannibal Lecter
3. H is Stringray on Steroids

Atleast, that has been my experience from having all three configs pass thru my grubby yet inept hands.

wow

the hhP is the total package for the serious player...4 bands, blend, piezo blend...unlimited tonal possibilities

the hs is really close but a little more subtle with the blending of the single with the hh

the three band h is just too damn fun and easy..for the player that wants to dial in a great tone quickly and focus on the gig at hand. the HP is really cool as you get the 4 band and the piezo and really get an interesting tonal package

Hello, my name is Jack and I originally bought an HH Bongo.

Then I think I bought three or four more, but that's another story.

I spent the better part of three years at the HH altar, and, when life gets tough and I feel lost and uncertain, I return there and I'm never disappointed.

But that single H is a real mofo.

I had a SR 4H/P and the piezo gave it a different and good sound. But I'm in a bar band and a cross between a neophyte and a troglodyte, so I couldn't fully appreciate the finesse that is th eSR 4H/P. It recently climbed aboard a midnight train to Georgia, where it is much appreciated. I now have a Bongo 5H, it doesn't sound like a SR on steroids TO ME, not to contradict the others. It is its own beast. One pickup, 3 band EQ, lots of different sounds. To me, aggressive, and in your face. It sounded one way with Slinkys, and another with EB flats, both good.
I guess the point of all this Patron induced rambling is: Your bass will sound unique to you in your hands.
Feel the bass, be the bass, Oh **** , listen to me......going on, somebody bang the bong, I mean gong.

Oh, you just made a friend. BP has been known to enjoy the occasional sip of Patron.

I've had three or four Bongo 5Hs and at least one four banger (the BPB) and I agree with you. Stingray on steroids? Nah. The Stingray has often been described as a P bass on steroids, so that means - wait, too deep for me. I don't know what it means, but it isn't accurate.

I mean, I understand the comment to a certain extent, mostly because it's so difficult to describe tone, but the Bongo electronics package does its own thing.

Different pickup. Different preamp. 18v versus 9v. Different wood. Just a completely distinct vibe. I dare anyone to listen to those videos John did for us a couple of weeks ago and say it sounds like a Stingray.

I can still pick up a Stingray or an SR5 or a Sterling and be as happy as the proverbial pig in the equally proverbial slop, but a Bongo single H fiver is a completely different proverbial animal.

Oooo, I feel like Lord Bongo again!

Um, proverbially, I mean.

If I may (and I'm serious here) humbly continue, the P Bass is a wonderful thing, to me. BUT, the Stingray was a magical thing, to me. It replaced my longing for a P Bass.

The Bongo replaced my longing for any other bass.

*note*
No F#$der basses were harmed during the production of this post.

Ahhh, validation....:D

But then, I'm not a serious player, whatever that is.

I had a dream about the piezo last night. Danged if I can remember anything about the dream, but I know I had it. The piezo is COOL and is becoming increasingly useful...my band is doing a new song that just plain sounds better using only the piezo.

Still real curious about the H....if a 5Hp comes up I'm probably going to try to snag it.

Ooh now I'm in a quandry over what Bongo I want to get! Part of me wants to get one with a different pickup config to my Sterling, which is only single H, but everyone says such good things about the H Bongos, especially when piezo equipped...

I think my only choice will be to make a trip to the US and try them out somewhere... (I did look at costs for flights to Dallas yesterday which I really shouldn't have done!)

You guys do like making life difficult don't you :D

I've got one of each available to try if you head east for half an hour or so (Northampton), none with the piezo option, though.

I have two HH bongos and love them. I bought a single H bongo without trying it. Still waiting on it......then played one at the NAMM show. MY GOD....that is all I could say....then I played the 30th....MY GOD.....that is all I could say.......

I like the possibilities of being able to have choices, and now I have some. I can't wait to flog the single H bongo at band practice.....it will clear 2 square miles once I am done....

Thankyou for that offer Paul :) Once I've got to the point of Bongo buying, I'll be sure to drop you a line!

(I could get really into this bass-buying malarkey) :D
