I can understand that, having spoken to your wife and her family. Sophisticated and wonderful.

And any child's birthday party is an excuse to drink! You have to admire that. The gringos were all a little shocked, I think.

'Is that man offering us SHOTS?'

Yeah. He sure is.

You know, that didn't even cross my mind. Those poor, sheltered folk. Or is it poor us? I bet we have more fun though.

I saw a few raised eyebrows.

Well, you know where I live. Whiteyville.

But it was funny, watching the Americans. Like, "Are we all drinking out of the same shot glass?" You sure are! We didn't even rinse it.

My father in law can be a true pain in the @ss, but mostly I adore him.

And he won't ever admit it, but I kicked his butt at the firing range.

Being a single H owner, I really wanted to get in on this but it has spun WAY to far out of control. Jack, let me know if the wife ever gets the craving, a vandal at school set loose all of our guinea pigs and now we have one of the largest "free range" g.p. farms in the country :) (and we do raise them big - we managed to catch them all but 3 - and one is a 5-7 pounder - he is/was the biggest/fattest pigs I have ever seen).

"Oh, look! There's a guinea pig, all cooked and ready to go. Someone left me a guinea pig, and all I have to do is microwave it! Yummy!"

And I was thinking, 'Well, there's a sentence you don't hear every day.'
Something very Carlin-esque about that.

To follow up and try to remain on topic.

I have been enamored of my Bongo HS 5 these last few days and have ignored the single H Bongo until tonight.

I've been playing it for the last two hours, and while I am incredibly bad about describing tone, you dual pickup guys (and I am one of you, of course) should try a single hummer Bongo. It is a pugnacious beast, not overly complex in knobbage, but willing to kick your @ss if you'd like.

I had one before and was too wrapped up in the nuclear abilities of the dual H to really appreciate it. You will notice that I have since regained my sensibilities and have returned once again to the simple yet deadly beauty of the single humbucker Bongo.

The lads who were at the Open House and had the opportunity to play Sterling's single hummer can throw their two cents in at any time. I welcome those who can actually describe tone.

For me....I have never encountered a bass that fits me like the Bongo.

Not to be overly dramatic, but this is the bass I have been wanting my entire life, only I didn't know it.

BP's HS had excellent tone, and I didn't even have the luxury of tweaking the tone to my spec's (I wasn't familiar with the control knob set-up). Also, I didn't have my personal rig set-up (again, unfamiliar set-up).

Very beefy, with more than enough clarity to cut through the mix.

My next Bongo purchase will be an HS DG B4...

You bet it was funny, but it reminded me of a Carlin line that I can't print here (family show, ya know). :D

Back to the subject (sort of)...and just as a comment...

...I've been damn-near ruined for 'other' basses after my Bongo purchase!

My brand new Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass is a great blues bass (great big tone), and it does look killer...but the neck doesn't compare to the B4, and it doesn't have anywhere near the tone-shaping capabilities.

Luckily, for the Fender, it has a place at my blues gig...otherwise, it would be up for adoption.

I'm spoiled.

Next!

I tell you, James, I have a 62 RI Jazz that I can't possibly sell or trade (Valentine's Day present from wife) but I never play it. I'm sure it's in the Camp Bovine Bass Closet, but all you have to do to screw yourself up is string a Bongo with flats and go play some blues with it....then kiss that Aerodyne bye-bye.

the i would if i could but She Who Rules must be obeyed,

I've got somebody locally that might trade me a Lakland Skyline Hollowbody for the Aerodyne...might be an interesting tone for blues/jazz.

The DG B4 that's on my wish list may very well get strung w/flats.

2X the flats. My 5HH got flats as soon as it came thru my door, 5 years old chromes from another ax [was on an FL, no fret dents...]. Now it's not the strings that need breaking in, it's the player: I'm learning to tame this beastie down to do the dinner hour [Back!! Bongo!! Good Bongo.. DOwn, I say.]

BTW Jack, I've got to add...to get a '62 RI Jazz Bass (let alone any bass) for a Valentine's Day present...makes you one of the luckiest b*stards I've had the pleasure of knowing!

Erika, if you're reading this...you rock!

She does rock, even if she is occasionally insane.

That was quite a present....she'd heard me talking about a Jazz to a friend of mine; we were perusing eBay and I pointed out a 62 RI and was saying I grew up with a (non-RI) early 60s Jazz and I think I was drinking and getting all nostalgic and weepy and - well, you guys know what I mean.

Honestly, I didn't really want a 62 RI Jazz. We were just having one of those bass slut conversations and she happened to overhear it, bless her heart.

To this day, she'll say, "Now which one did I get you again?" She is clue-free, although she thinks the new blue Bongo is "pretty".

Back on topic, we rehearsed last night for the first time since the last Ice Age and I used the blue Bongo HS for the first hour or so (with Slinkys).

Wow. What a HUGE tonal difference when you sweep that pickup knob back and forth. The Cowpilots were suitably impressed.

Then, for the last half of rehearsal, I switched to the single hummer.

I am now, finally, and I know I'm late to the party, beginning to understand why Sterling once said that he wished he had released the single hummer first.

(I can be pretty dense.)

And I can't quite put my finger on what it is that sets the single H apart. Yeah, yeah, I love my double hummers and the HS is just so damned elegant and versatile, but the caveman in me is really digging the "just pull the trigger and it goes boom" tonal assault of the single H.

Now keep in mind that I am a senseless slut for these basses. I love them all, really, and my preferences change like the seasons, only these would be seasons that would change every two weeks or so.....so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt.

I loves me some Bongos.

But I'm having a little thing with my single hummer.

the I dunno what Ben was thinking but he ain't gettin' it back,
Jack
