Would it be possible to change the pickup switching scheme on a Bongo 4HH to be similar to what's available on the new Stingrays? I'm talking about replacing the pan pot with a 5 way rotary switch to give the same options as the Stingray.

I really dig my new Stingray 4HS and both of my Bongo 4HH basses, but would love for one of my Bongos to have that switching scheme.

Is this question a joke to get a response?
What would you gain by doing that, the pan switch is part of the bongo's best features for tonal variation.
not trying to be rude. I have a stingray too and wish it had a pan switch but I can understand the reason EBMM kept the Stingray and Sterling in original form.

Hey i think it's a cool question! I bet the Bongo pre-amp and neo mags could sound pretty killer witht he switch. Not sure if it's possible though.

Not even close to a joke. I can't get position 4 with my Bongos. I'm not even trying to imply that the Bongos lack something. I would love to have one of my Bongos have a pan, the other to have a switch.

Dargin, can you check with the pre-amp genius (Dudley?) to see if this would be feasible?

This is a wonderful place.

I wouldn't dream of changing out my pan knob for a switch, but someone did, and that is just cool.

Pan for me...you can create much more subtle changes in tone between the pickups (IMHO).

Course, my new Bongo is going the single-pup route...so it's a moot point in my case. :p

Brilliant. Sometimes, my feeble mind can recognize that I am in the presence of genius. Way cool to be able to run separate coils and stuff. Pan+Switch =

Five coolios:

I like the pan, though I hardly hear any difference with reasonable changes to it. +1 with Lord Bongo. Love it, but wouldn't change it.

I thought I remember hearing this before from some "official" type person, however I could be making this up. I was under the impression that the pickups themselves are not made to have the coils split, and therefore you couldn't do a dual SR style switch. I could hallucinated though.

and +1 on the pan, me likey

I enjoy having the switch on the Daion, as it priovides instant gratification for tonal changes. I'm willing to try something new with the Bongo, though.

A rotary switch would be cool, though. You couldn't go wrong either way.

Even if the Bongo PUs were splittable, I still think you couldn't just add a rotary switch. Ever look inside a Bongo? Even without looking inside, look at the front and you see the pots are not mounted to the bass top, but to some inner chassis.

IF the PUs actually CAN be split, given the componentry already on board in the control cavity, I think the only way to reasonably mod the thing is minitoggles, which means you still don't get the joy stick effect, the automatic transmission to tonal guruhood.

However with minitoggles, you can at least orient them on the body so that your fave setups might be both up or both down. The remaining two 'diagonal split' positions will be useful as well, but they are not the ones you reach for in a hurry.

My crystal ball says that Larry's next bass might be a dual pup SR.

It was going to be until Disquieter put that 2005 LE Buttercream Bongo 5 HH up for sale.

I do want to add that I don't have any problem with the sound I'm getting out of my Bongos with the pickup blend knob in the center detent though.

Again, I'd also like to add that I don't think that there's anything wrong with the pan pot, I am just curious about a switch.
