I just got a 5 stringed Music Man Bongo for Christmas which is awesome. But when I try to play on the A and D strings I get a weird muted noise up until the 7th fret, it sounds like a loss of action. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

Try loosening the truss rod a bit.

Look down the edge of the fretboard, does the neck appear to bow backward so there's very little gap between the string and fret board?
If so, all it takes is a simple turn of the truss rod...that's what truss rods are for.
Use something metal that will fit in the hole of the truss wheel, and give it 1/4 turn. Remember, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey...in this case you are loosening it. I only go with 1/4 turn increments at a time. You usually don't want the neck perfectly straight, but a tiny bit of forward bow.

So adjusting the truss rod should fix my problem... how often do you think this'll have to be done?
