I found bliss today my friends... but first:

I love my Bongo... I really really love my Bongo. I am having a hard time with how much I love this Bongo, and how much I want to play it... all the time. So here it goes:

"Hi, my name is Matt, and I'm a Bongoloid."

I really really love my Bongo. I want more... I want one for every day of the week... I want one in every color of the rainbow, I want one with those evil little metal bars on it.... but mainly I want -MY- Bongo. Fretless Piezo Equipped Bongo's with Unlined Ebony Fretboards Rule... and Dogs Drool (ok, so that reference doesn't really work here, but it made me laugh).

NEXT!
I like flats too, all shapes and sizes. But they didn't seem right on the Bongo... and it got its stock Slinkys back on as quick as they got taken off. I've left them on, and they are settling in a bit finally... but dang they are Zingy. They were on the chopping block, but I didn't know what to replace them with. Until TODAY!

I wandered around a bit this morning asking people for packing foam... and eventually realized we had some boxes with some still in it. People thought I was crazy... but I was on a mission. I finally found some in nice long strips of varying sizes and widths... SCORE! So I brought it home and immediatly shoved it under the Strings behind the Bridge Bucker, a la homemade mute... and BAM! Magic... magical unicorn bliss of all that is sacred in the bass world.

Bongo + Slinkys + Mutes = Perfection

So, for now, Slinkys stay on... Bongo isn't getting put down.... and I'll be upping the daily caffiene intake to make up for the lost sleep playing. All is well in the world.

BP if you ever make a Bongo with stock mutes, I'm buying it... I dont care what color or material it is made out of... I'm buying it... or five. Who am I kidding, I'll probably buy five more anyways. Bongo Bongo Bongo Bongo BONGO! I don't got bit by the Bongo Bug Bad!

GO GET SOME FOAM, and a Bongo if you don't have one.... or five!

That is all... for now.

I'm always amazed at how good the B strings sound on all my Bongo fivers, such good quality and consistency. You should be very proud of your creation Big Guy!

Lovin Flats

I switched to EB Group 3 flats on my stealth bongo -- and am loving it. Play at church, seats about 900. The bottom end and punch with the flats is really realy nice, and really blends in a band setting (sounds better in the band than playing at home). Had one guitar palyer tell me its the best a bass ever sounded in our room. Another bass player asked to borrow the Bongo for his Sunday! And he plays a Stingray.

Secretly, I have a nice Warwick Thumb neck through with round wounds that sounds fabulous at home, really sings, expressive. But in the band setting the Bongo is THE instrument to go for.

I got to jam a little on sat with the gc boys...I played my true gold Bongo single H rosewood neck....It was a blast.

I remember seeing a picture of that bass... it was shortly after joining the forums. Beautiful instrument.

The critics can all eat fooey when it comes to the Bongo... they are insane... or have never played one... or wouldn't know tasty if it slapped them in the face and said "BOO". Even my Guitarist friend said it was the most comfortable, best sounding instrument he's ever held.... he wants to know when the "Bongo Guitar" is coming out.

I honestly thing the Bongo will continue and continue to grow... I think it will eventually re-invent the standard for electric basses.... it was probably ahead of its time.... but I love how it is just waiting in the shadows... whispering in the occassional passer-by's ear... spreading the word... and once you get it... you get it. But once you've gotten it... you don't tend to go back.

A Bongo was literally the first EBMM instrument I ever held/played... I would have bought it then if I had the money and a bit more experience under my belt... it was probably in 2004... later I had a Dargie 1... which I miss, but its in very good hands.... and now this baby. Oddly enough it feels like coming home.... all roads lead back to Bongo.

Don't get me wrong... I love my 25ths... also amazing... but they are indeed amazing in a different way.... and I am incredibly satisfied with them. But there is just something addictive about the Bongo. It is just so darn responsive to EVERYTHING... EQ Tweaks, Gain Tweaks, Finger Position, Finger Preasure, Fretting Technique, Pickup Balance... or any combination there of.

Its just freakin' -FUN- to play!

Wow I must have good taste to own a very similar bass as BP! Of course mine is backwards but True Gold sure is a fantastic color! :)

I'm moving to a small apartment in a big city soon and I will not be able to bring the entire bass collection... the one thing that I'm not leaving behind is my bongo!!

Floozy, how do you like the bongo DD2 Ebony Fretless vs. the "two-five" fretless?

Matt - did you attach the foam to the bridge or body or just prop it between the bridge and strings? I've done something like this long ago because my old '78 had the mutes and I love the sound. But I worried a piece of foam would just flop out in the middle of a gig. And I wasn't real keen on the idea of taping or glue, especially on something like your old Dargie!
