I like them because they add a percussive thump and that unique piezo sizzle to the Bongo's sound. I like good presence in my tone without a bunch of zing, and a well done piezo setup offers that. The EBMM piezo bridge is an expensive option, but worth it if you value the capability that it definitely adds.

I don't have much experience with piezo's. I did play a bass that had them once and spent a while fiddling around with them but I was just left with the impression they were a bit too bright and, well, "tinny". Maybe I was overdoing it. I definitely need to be educated to the subtleties here.

You mean besides the fact that I'm a certifiable malcontent and that I tend to be trouble?

Ken...

Isn't that a pre-requisite for most of us posting on internet forums? :D

Oh and... GrayDad, piezo pickup on bass totally rock by the way check out what it can do on a Sterling.
My Bongo 5HH has a piezo and I wouldn't change it for the world

Then, you begin to wonder about the single coil. "It's different, isn't it?" --

But BP (and a few of us) is always talking about the Secret Weapon single H Bongo, isn't he? And there must be something to it...

See where I'm going?

Yeah, Right Here...this guy's playing is a GREAT example of the Single H...
makes you think....

Hey, we'll all be old one day and then the kids will replace "Barry Manilow" with "Led Zeppelin"... hey, wait a minute, they already do that...

OK, thanks, I still thought the "zing" sounded a bit "tinny" until the end when he did some tapping type stuff and that sounded really cool. But I tap like I slap (that is, terribly) so I don't know whether I'd get much benefit.

I reckon I'd be better off spending the piezo money on bass lessons, since I've never had any...

hey that guy it's from Chile and plays in a band called Opus 3, in fact we will be together on a gig on april 24th... 2 bongos on stage that night

This guy has a lot of videos playing the bongo and he mades them with educational propuoses, he has a section on this page Suena.cl - Toda la música chilena where he does reviews and teaches some bass lessons.

By the way, GreyDad here wants to get a Bongo 6 and we 6ers don't have the piezo option.... yet ;)

Where are these Blasphemers?!

I haven't heard that one around here... and when it does I think a little piece of my soul may die.... It's a shame some people in my generation can't recognize the greats, and the "true" musical geniuses.

I should read the small print - didn't realize 6ers had no piezo option yet

Well, that's good! One less decision to make! I'm ok with that

I'm a bit late but I will weigh in on this thread any way. GreyDad, Bongos made to your specs are worth the wait. I ordered my fretless 6 the way I wanted it and marvel at its beauty every time I play it. I lucked out with my fretted 6 at a local music store. If I hadn't lucked out with exactly what I wanted, I would have ordered and waited. Besides, time passes quickly when you approach middle age (speaking for myself of course);)

Single H is my absolute favorite of my Bongos. A very rich growl.

Not to Jack this thread, but how do you go about ordering a bass from EB if you want a particular model?

You have to go through your local authorized EBMM dealer store, you have a set of choices of colours and pickguards in accordance with which of these are available this year, to be sure you can check on their instruments website, as in this example Ernie Ball Music Man Bongo 4 Bass Guitar then once you have decided on your favorite combination you make your final order with your dealer, I would assume that a deposit is mandatory and then the wait begins, don't quote me on how long it takes but by reading what the people have been waiting here it looks like anything between 4 to 6 months. Some lucky people get it quicker in the eventuality that their particualr choice had just come out of the EBMM oven ;)

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments, BL, appreciated.

Being likewise middle aged it's the very speed that time passes that now makes me so impatient to own as many of these basses as possible :)

I think the consensus is to place a custom order so I reckon I'll be doing that. However, I'm intrigued by the number of recommendations for the single H. The two Bongo's I've played so far have both been dual pickups. I note that Jack, whose opinion in these matters is difficult to discount, seems to own a disproportionate number of single H's. This is enough to make me go looking for one I can try and do some hands-on research before I order.

The weird thing about the Bongo single H vs the HH or HS is that the bridge pick up is placed differently on the dual PU models. So whereas you can get the traditional SR sound from a SR HH, you cannot really get the Bongo H sound from a Bongo HH or HS. Not that I really know how the single H Bongo sounds, I've never played a single H Bongo. But I will soon, as I now own one which is on ots way to me:D
