To me, it all boils down to the sound. I love the sound of my MusicMan's, and there's nothing out there that sounds like them. I never listen to a recording and think, "oh that guy is playing a [name your boutique bass brand]". But there's no mistaking the sound of my Stingray, which is unique and different from my Stringray5, both of which are unique and different from my two Bongos. And none of them sound like any of the walnut/bubinga/wenge/spalted/birdseye/flamed/purpleheart/ziricote/ebony/bartolini/hipshot/nordstrand/singlecut hand-built concoctions (not that there's anything wrong with such a thing). And although those sorts of instruments are unquestionably very fine basses, I couldn't pick one out of a mix if my life depended on it.
And finally, the build consistency of MusicMan is so consistent--if any of my MusicMan's ever get stolen (Gaaaaaahhhh!), I know I can pick a new one off the shelf and have pretty much exactly the same instrument right away.
