Yeah...came out before NAMM

Hello All,

With just a week before NAMM the 20th Anniversary SR5 got a glowing and well deserved review from Bass Player Magazine. My only beef with the article would be, in the not to distant future, when BP MAG reviews the 'new' 5 String 'P' basses coming out next week, they also list under Cons: "not the most versitile bass, sound wise, but then again, that's not the deal". But don't get me wrong there, this was a very positive review and listed the qualities that we all know and love.

Also, a huge Markbass Amp and Cab, Classic 300 and CL108 were also reviewed, and also hit the 'very cool' mark.

They also printed my letter in the op-ed page, so geez, it was 'really good BP Magazine" day.

Cheers,
MJK

Ordering was cut off on the 20th Anniversary Stingray 5's several months ago. There are still a handful of stores that have them in stock, but hurry, with reviews like that they won't last!

You can still buy the bass. Some dealers have ordered them for stock, so they are out there.

Don't get me wrong he didn't say anything bad about the bass, made some very positive comments about it especially the eq. Again he didnt say anything bad about the bass, for some reason I just got the vibe the SR wasn't the sound he was after or just not his thing, which there is nothing wrong with that, different strokes you know. Again Im probably totally wrong and the dude may have 4 or 5 of the things laying around.

On a side not for some reason watching that made me wish my SR5 had a maple fretboard.

Ed Friedland's video review was better. Not that JH didn't do a good job, but Ed took more time and of course played the living snot outta the thing.

Listen to how he plays. Seems like he is more jazz bass minded to me...perhaps it just didn't get that old dry "deadwood" sound he's looking for....

Its funny you mention Ed, I picked up his slap bass DVD a while back and Ive been watching it while surfing here today, figure while for the most part I hate slapping because most everybody I see locally uses it for a way to wank badly and I dont want to be that guy, I might as well get better at it and not be stubborn and limit myself.

For someone giving reviews, especially a senior/chief editor or whatever he is, objectivity is considered to be a mark of professionalism and authenticity. Even if he's actually a closet hardline knucklehead, it would be unprofessional of him in his role at BP Mag, to make that evident. It would also actually lessen the objective authenticity of his positive comments about the bass.

Kind of the same concept as if you've ever been asked to provide input on the job performance of someone you work with, by that person's manager/supervisor/whatever. If you have nothing but positive comments about the person, the credibility of those comments goes out the window. But even just a tad of constructive criticism along with the positive comments makes all the positive stuff more credible, because it shows objectivity.

And this guy didn't really even give any constructive criticism, other than the comment about versatility, but even then, he followed that up with the very savy comment that if you're a knucklehead, you're not looking for a bass that sounds like other basses.

So yeah, I don't think there's necessarily any reason to believe he's not an EBMM kinda guy. I think he was just doing his job. And even if he's not ... that's life, right? As much as we knuckleheads think that everyone in the industry should just be gushing over EBMMs at every opportunity, that's just not realistic.

PEACE!

Just had a funny thought. Don't take this the wrong way Aragorn - I'm not saying this about you specifically - just in general about how strongly we feel about EBMMs & how suspected infidels arouse disdain & scowls from us. It's interestingly similar to so many other forms of intolerance for those who differ from us in some way ... sexism/sexists, racism/racists, nationalism/nationalists ... I guess this particular phenomenon would be called bassism, and we're all bassists. :D
