The spec sheets list the bridge single coil on the regular Morse and Y2Ds as being proprietary to Music Man. Is there a Dimarzio equivalent or similar pickup that can be bought?

That one is a neat pickup and yeah, I don't think you can buy it on it's own. As I understand it from Tommy, the original one for Steve was hand wound by Dudley, before Dimarzio started producing something similar for EBMM.

Best bet would be to email Dimarzio, they'd be best qualified to suggest something.

FWIW, I've tried many, many pickups in that same spot to try out different sounds. Because of the spacing from the bridge, you're going to get a particular sound in there, no matter what you use. I wanted noiseless in my main Morse, so I've currently got a Bill Lawrence L45 in there, it's not the same as the original p'up, but it's pretty decent.

Beej is the master tweaker when it comes to Morse mods and he has been preaching Bill Lawrence for awhile. I would think his opinion is solid considering how many different single coils he has gone through in the past......but I have a SD Duckbucker in that slot and I love it. There are plenty of options to try so have fun and keep us posted !!

Thanks for the input guys. I emailed Dimarzio yesterday, so we'll see what they come back with. I've only played one Morse before (a Y2D), and I was amazed at how "tele-ish" the bridge single coil sounded on its own. Like you said beej, the spacing from the bridge is probably going to give any pickup that bit of twang character...I just don't want the output to be too hi or low.

BTW, I bought a Sub1 and plan on routing an additional spot for a bridge single coil, a la the Y2D pickup config.

Wow, I already heard back from dimarzio! Here's what they said when I inquired about a production version of the morse bridge single coil:

"It would be an HS-3 (DP117)*wired in single-coil mode (black hot, red & bare ground, green and white not connected)."

On the bridge single coil pickup of the Morse, it is written : "DP117EB". I guess it means it's a DP117 specially made for EB (Ernie Ball ;)).

Huh ... that is very interesting. Nice detective work. Wonder how different it sounds wired up for noisefree operation?

It sounds a lot different! I use a split HS-3s and YJMs in my two main S-type guitars and they are my favourite SCs. When you split the HS-3 the output gets a lift and brightness and attack is improved massively. I know a lot of people find the HS-3 wooly and bland with 250k pots when wired humbucking, but splitting it brings out everything I want in a real SC: twang for days, amazing definition, great overtones and strong fundementals. Eric Johnson used to use split HS-2s in his Strats and if such a tone hound can find joy in a split noise cancelling PU, odds are that the idea isn't entirely whack - I know it ended my search for my perfect SC.

Cheers

Fantastic! Thanks for posting that.

Let me ask all of you Morse guys something...is the bridge single coil extremely noisy when it's on by itself?

It's not that noisy (the neck single is much more prone to it), but you do get some hum.

On my Y2D I have the bridge single wired to a Silent Circuit, it takes out some of that noise. (It's also wired in when I split the bridge p'up.)

On my main Morse I use it a lot with some dirt, I've got a noiseless Bill Lawrence L45 in there as a replacement. It's a fantastic pickup, not too hot and very bright- so a good fit for that p'up (plus there's no hum). (It's the best sounding noisefree single I've tried, booted a different BL pickup which booted a Dimarzio Area, etc ...)

Cool. Thanks for the info everyone. I think once the Sub1 gets here I'm going to definitely add the bridge single coil. If I don't like the stock pickups, I'm going to give the Dimarzio Morse models a try and add a push/pull tone pot to split the bridge bucker.

No the single coils are not noisy. I don't play with full gain, I'm too old for that :D (well the gain on my Marshall is on 7.5 ... I'm still a bit young).
I like the sound of the bridge single coil. Great rock sound !
The combination of both single coil is really great : with the dirty channel of my Fender Blues Deville I have a great Neil Young sound with this combination : dirty but with a lot of clarity !

Sounds great. Appreciate the input. The noise thing is really a non-issue for me, but I know some guys can't stand any noise at all.
