What are your thoughts on the one and only Buckethead? I personally love him. He is fast becoming my favorite player. His technique is flawless, and he makes the most difficult runs look easy. His use of chromatics and diminished arpeggios while multi-finger tapping creates a very characteristic "creepy" sound. It seems like there's nothing he can't do on the guitar. Tapping, sweep picking, speed picking, legato, hybrid picking, funkstyle strumming...the man can do it all.

Some would call his persona gimmicky or lame...but think about the image he is presenting. This is a 6'3, rail thin man, in a yellow raincoat, with a white mask and bucket of KFC chicken on his head! He totally obliterates the cliche of the swaggering, arrogant, drunken rockstar guitarist. He is injecting something fresh and new into guitar culture. I agree the whole thing would fall flat on its face if he didn't have arguably the best chops in rock and metal to go with the getup. So what do you think? Is Bucket better than JP? Is anyone better than Buckethead??

Finally, I present to you....BUCKETHEAD UNMASKED. Behold the man, the machine, the myth in all his true splendor!!! (just kidding, in all honesty, these are just some cool pics of Buckethead...note the pinky)

I enjoy what he does, great player, but I think I'd like him more if he was a part of a whole band instead of a solo act. I havn't been compelled to buy every one of his albums, but I really like a few tracks on Enter The Chicken.

Interesting you comment how he isnt the rockstar type. I think he is more the typical guitarist (of the shred or slightly shred variety) in that he is probably socially inebt like most of us (i'm not a true shredder but i count myself in the socially inebt!)
There is a type of guitarist who will just sit there all day long playing when growing up (and when grown up) rather than socialise. I reckon Buckethead is one of those guys. No big ego, probably the opposite, shy and retiring.
Rockstars more about showing off, musicians more about the music.
just a thought anyway.....!

Ah, so that's it!

That explains a lot, because although I can't play, I have no social skills!

oh, hang on a minute....

yeah this is a gibson thread. but the guitar he plays wasnt a gibson until recently. it was a custom build that gibson kinda made saying it was theres. a bit like esp did with hetfields iron cross which is a gibson. $$$$$ thats what it is.

i think he write some beautifull melodys and his technique is outstanding but he is a former pupil of paul gilbert so im guessing technique was drummed into him a lot.
my personal favourite is soothsayer. i think daves right a lot of these big rock stars are very shy and retiring when off the stage. ive seen pictures of him uncloaked before , he does remind me a lot of maryln manson before he put all the makeup on.

wether hes better than jp. is personal preference but i personally think you should check guthrie govan out before you go considering if anyone is better than buckethead.
