OverDrive - Digitech Hardwire CM-2 (I have a Pinnacle and Tim, the CM-2 is awesome)
Distortion - Dano Cool Cat Fuzz (I run this and a Skreddy Lunar Module)
Chorus - Digitech Hardwire Chorus hands down beautiful sounds electric and acoustic.
Delay - Either EHX SMMH or Digitech Hardwire, Both fun with lots of options including a looper and tap tempo.
Reverb - I don't know, I use my amps (Mesa Express)
Tuner - Snark Clip on (save the board space)
Bonus - MXR Eddie Van Halen Phase 90 (I love this pedal)
Double Bonus - Cry Baby original (I use the Buddy Guy version but it's too pricey)

I've been through a lot of pedals and found the Digitech Hardwire to be a LOT of bang for the buck in both quality and tone.

the ocd? (curious what you meant)

Fulltone OCD Drive. The newer Fulltone PlimSoul though covers everything from the OCD and TubeScreamer and eveything between. The PlimSoul will beef up thin Single coils nicely. A Steve Morse Y2D through the PlimSoul is Sonic Heaven.

I know the OCD....it's on my list. I was wondering what he meant by "only one will knock you off yer feet". I was asking if he was talking about the OCD, or one of the other pedals on my list.

I am considering the PlimSoul as well.

I don't even know what I meant reading that.....probably something about of all the great OD pedals out there you (or anyone really) will probably only really like a few (i.e 'know you off your feet')......OD pedals are such a personal taste thing

It's not even an interesting point I was making...but I'm diggin this thread - creepin other peoples pedal boards gives me ideas

tc electronic will have a tone print setting for the hall of fame reverb pedal sooner than later that steve and myself have been working on. if all goes to plan..........we will fine tune it next week at the factory. the pedal works really well right out of the box.

I was just on the TC Electronic website and was wondering why Steve did not have more Tone Prints. Thanks for the heads up. From watching the Video of the TC Flashback with Steve. It looked like he really liked the Flashback. It was the kicker for me, So I bought it. I love everything the Flashback can do. Sounds great in a small box. I thought I heard somewhere that Steve Morse used Two FlashBacks in his rig? That true? If so, Tommy could you give any setting exsamples? I'll also keep my eye out for any Tone Prints from Steve on the TC website. Thanks!

Alright...I just thought I'd update my progress here. I now realize that for what I want (or what I want right now) that $500 USD (for the pedals) isn't going to get me there. So, the budget is blown.

Fortunately, the holidays were good to me and I've got some extra cash to play with. I also won my fantasy football league and got $1400 cash for that. :)

I picked up some used pedals and bought a couple of new ones too. Here is what I've got so far:

TC Electronic Flashback Delay $125
TC Electronic Hall of Fame Reverb $100
TC Electronic Vortex Flanger $100 - I opted for flanger over chorus because if set right I think it can sound like chorus too.
Fulltone OCD $115
Korg Pitchblack Tuner $80
MXR Custom Shop Compressor $109
Dunlop DC Power Brick $50

That's where I'm at right now, but looking to add an EB Volume pedal and maybe a cheap metal distortion pedal for the times that I want heavy gain. I feel like it's a good starting point to build on and gets me some good sounds and some quality pedals that are all true bypass. Now I need to build a board for them.

Personally, I would either opt for the TC multi unit which is fantastic at a price point or...

Get a versatile dirt and a great modulation, e.g. Surh Riot/ Timmy/ V-Twin etc and a Strymon Timeline Delay. This covers many bases. I could honestly lose all my stuff except for the V-Twin and the Timeline/ or El Capistan. These can be found at very sensible prices.

I would echo others though, in that once you go down the pedal route you tend to get hooked on the perceived nuances. What is the next best?!!! Its a money pit and money is much better spent on EBMM guitars in my opinion. I am currently in pedal rehab. Having said all that I think the timeline has been my most valuable pedal investment. The delays are so varied and hang like a mist around each note, without interfering or abusing my core tone. Good luck.

I hear you Andy. I've experimented with multi units before, and to this point have not been satisfied with them.....usually because of the navigation and limited options with patch labeling. What appeals to me about the indy pedal set-up is being able to tweak or change each pedal as I see fit. I can get a whole new unit for one effect if I choose, and not have to replace and relearn every effect that I have. I don't mind spending $100 here or there every few months on a new pedal if I feel like tweaking. It's part of the learning process for me, and it's fun.

The flashback you have will cover all your "delay" needs.

Digging the Flashback Spud, and not finding it "metallic" sounding as Spkirby described.....at least not with my gear.

Glad its working out for you, the Flashback's a good pedal but when put up against my T-Rex Replica it lost out big time, but then the Replica is 3x the price!

What effect's next on your shopping list?

A lot of Nova System recommendations out there. I was just reading some reviews of it that talked about less than desireable distortion and a poor chorus effect. Any truth?

....

I was a long-time board player, all effects before the amp into a clean amp. I sold everything and got a TC Nova System, for me a fantastic all-in-a-box solution with very good sounds, also the drive sounds (both OD and distortion). Definitely not for metal sounds, more in the classic rock area. Check it out if you get the possibility for moneyback. There are no amp models but very good analog drive sounds and lot more possibilities. Cool boost function. You can use it like a pedal board (switching on/off the effects) and have the comfort of saving presets. With the additional g-switch you can use the best of both worlds, switching presets and the effects at the same time.

I love it and for the price its a real deal.

Boss Tuner, Boss Chorus, Boss Digital Delay, and A BB Pre amp from Xotic Effects. I think that puts us right near the $500 mark.

I use the bare necessities with a board these days (actually no board at all now). When I started playing guitar about 25 years ago, I used tons of effects. I had (and still do have somewhere) an old Zoom 9030 multi effects processor with the midi board 8050 or something like that. I could switch the channel/effects via a patch or like the Nova system and use one patch at a time, or add/remove certain effects from within any single patch. I also had pedals all over the place. I was deemed the 'effects monger' with my band mates back in the day. It got to the point where my sound was always using some type of an effect present. I wasn't really concerned about coloring tone, etc. I was young, it was the 80's!

In today's day and age, I plug directly into my Mark V (before that it was a Mark IV), in any event, you get my point. I have in the loop a TC Flashback, before the amp is a first version Xotic BB Preamp. In the Tuner out on back of the amp is a TC Poly tune. That's it! :) Do I miss the flanger, chorus, wah, other various dirt boxes? Sure, they were fun. But do I 'need' them, not really.. The tone of the tube amp gives me what I need in the clean and dirty channels, the effects, well, they are just effects. Maybe it's old age, maybe it's a complex, maybe it's just a time in my career.

Now back on topic, sorry for all that.. Here is an ideal board schematic for me. BB Preamp > to Amp. (Tuner) > Stereo Delay in the FX loop. That also opens up for the possibility of a wet setup, such as adding another amp for the left channel, or perhaps getting a stereo chorus in there before the delay, maybe something along the lines of a flanger too. But then I will be getting into that territory again. Price without amp, is under $500. Add George L and Mogami cables, and your at $500.

This is what works great and ideal for me and my tone, might not be the case for everyone. But for me, I could do without all the additional effects, pedal board, etc... good luck on your quest!
