I notice a few other post like this, thought I would get mine in here too. I got this bass from my dad when I was 12, and he said it was a '79, or '80. I'm not sure. I've looked at a few of the serial number list on this board, but none of them seem to have my number listed.

Thanks in advance for any help!

MusicMan StingRay 4-string
Serial Number : B006720

When Ernie Ball purchased MM in 1984, Pre EB serial/date records apparently didn't go with the deal....maybe records weren't kept...maybe lost?....mystery!!!!

Pre EB serial/dates didn't necessarily run in chronological order....you can have a bunch of serials which conform and then a rogue one appears that throws everything out of order.

These are my records:

B005942..12 Sep 1978/22 Feb 1978. Brown with Maple. Black pg.
B006392..Jul/Jul 1977. Sunburst with Maple.
B006717..1977. Sunburst with Maple. Black pg.
B007380..1978. Natural with Maple.

As you can see, B005942 is a rogue.

My guess is that it's highly likely you have a 1977 Bass as yours is so close to B006717....on the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if, infact, yours was actually a 79 or 80 model as you think you remember being told!

79 models introduced "Music Man" stamped on the tail piece of the bridge.

The only sure way to date your Bass is to remove the neck and inspect the dates on the neck heel and body pocket.

Keep me informed....cheers.

P.S. I've just read your thread on the cracked circuit board....another clue to help date your Bass...pre-amps encased in black epoxy were phased out in late 78 - early 79.
