Hello, I recently re-acquired this wonderful instrument in poor condition. Is this condition fixable?

It should be better than it was. Looks like someone really filed down the grooves in that nut. Looks like the strings were about even with the fretboard. I imagine it buzzed something awful and with that much material gone, no wonder it broke the way it did.

Which brings up an interesting question. On a fretless, how much space between the bottom of the string and the fretboard (at the nut) should there be?

It should be closer than on a fretted bass, or the first position notes would be sharp.

Actually, that's the exact way my white fretless Bongo looks. And, it was set up by Juan Guitarrez, Gardner of Death before it shipped to me brand new. A fretless can, and should, have the string at the fretboard at the nut--it doesn't have to clear any frets.

The nut is still broken, though.
