Buying a Luke I

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a Luke I, and does anyone know why the Luke was changed from a floating trem to what it is now?

You can try finding one on eBay.
I guess it was changed according to Luke's own personal preferences since it's a signature model.

your best bet to find a Luke1 is to find one on ebay or some classifieds page. MM hasnt made those since the Luke 2 came out.

as far as the trem goes... MM makes their sig models exactly what the artist wants. so, they flloyd was replaced with the MM vintage trem cuz Luke likes the MM trem better. and actually i beleive the Luke 2's trem is set to float from the factory - i know mine came setup floating

I only ask as I MAY be forced to sell one of my EBMMs and as I'm no longer a Floyd fan, the reluctant first choice would be my Luke 1...

Funny, but I've never actually sat down with my Luke 1 and Luke 2 and done a like-for-like comparison... Maybe I should do that!

If you ever get around to doing a comparison, I'd love to know what you think. ie Is the Luke I brighter, which has the better overall tone. Which Tremlo do you prefer, and which nut is better - the lock nut or the open nut.

If you lived in Australia I would be offerring as much as could afford for that guitar, however I wouldn't know how to manage an overseas purchase.

By the way is the metal plat that is used to bolt the neck to the body; sunken into the body, I recall that is how they use to be made?

I have had floyds, and the MM vintage trems have all the stabilty without all the trouble if you ask me, and I use the trem a lot. The floyd does color the sound, so they may sound different. I bet both models rock

Yes, the plate is recessed into the body so it's flat - much nicer feel I think.

Good news is, I may not have to sell it now - good news for me, but of course I realize it's a blow to those that may potentially have had an opportunity to get their hands on one... sorry to do this. Thanks to the few that offered to take it off my hands though! It is nice to know I own a highly desirable instrument!

Still not got round to doing a side-by-side comparison, although I do find myself being more creative / flamboyant on the Luke 2... weird!

Will have a look at the vids mentioned to see / hear the difference they achieve.

Hi Brent,

Actually, I think my Luke 2 is. Seems a little lighter and zingier then my Luke 1...

That could be down to a couple of things though - got newer strings and different saddles on my Luke 2 now. After doing a quick check, I now need to put some fresh strings on my Floyed axe! That would probably give it a bit more 'sparkle'!

Just posted a reply to Brentrocks about a quick comparison I've done with my Lukes - I think my Luke 2 is brighter than my Luke 1 as they are at the moment...

As for nuts - I definitely prefer the open nut. Cosmetically and functionally - changing strings is a doddle with the vintage style tremolo and locking tuners. Whereas with the Floyd, I tend to get annoyed with all the fiddling that's needed and the time it takes (about 3 times as long) - although the end result is cool!

As a teenager (a decade ago), I used to love Floyds - influenced by the fact most of my fave guitarist were using them. I didn't like the vintage tremolos purely for aesthetics - they looked cheap, uncomfortable and I was led to believe they didn't hold their tuning for long, hence avoiding them. Around this time was when I bought my Luke 1.

When the Wilkinson VS100 came out, I changed my mind - much preferring the simplicity, ability and looks of it. Trouble is I never found a guitar with one on at the time that I 'fell in love with' so never bought one.

When I saw the vintage tremolos that EB were producing with the fold over tail (with the inscription on) I just thought 'that's more like it!'. Since then I've got the Luke 2 and an ASS - both have these great tremolos on them and I wouldn't look back.

Now I've just got to try a Petrucci out to see how they feel...

So, the tremolos do feel different, sound different and are different to use / maintain. I prefer the simplicity of the vintage styles now but, as Sub1 Zero says - they both rock!

Don't you find it a pain to get a good photo of the body colour? In all the pics I've taken of mine, the colour never seems to look as it does in real life!

The lamp in that bedroom has one of those funky pink bulbs that's supposed to be easy on the eyes. The colors in your pic are much closer to the real thing.

I recently got my Luke back from the PLEK machine. Wow what a player!

i think it's still possible to buy luke 1 if you live in usa or europe(from ebay,etc).. but if you live in asia it's almost impossible.. very rare here..

i remember before i bought mine in 2005, i was looking for that guitar for about 2 years, it was so hard to find, even mae guitars hongkong (collectible guitar seller) said that it is a rare guitar to find nowadays.. i almost desperate, until one day i had a change to buy that, and i didn't think twice..

so, if you like it, and you find it.. you'd better get it quickly, because it's quite rare now..

i bought that luke 1 since that guitar was my dream from the first time i played guitar, and i also really like that red color(i found that rolls burgundy is the closest color which still available now)

now i'm still saving for luke 2.. i ve heard that luke 2's neck feels little bit different from the luke 1

i think musicman floyd style tremolo is very good, i never have significant problems with tuning, and for changing strings, it's also not that difficult if we change it one by one from the 1st string to 6th string, i think it only takes 20-30 minute if we do it right(from my experience)

if you like to know little bit of how it sounds, i have one song sample which i played with luke 1 , sorry for the bad playing quality but it's about the sound anyway , i use line6 podxt straight to computer
