I stll keep my Digitech RP-2000 handy for recording, and as a backup rig (run directly into my Peavey Classic 120/120 power amp).

I had a GNX2 which I initially bought to replace the RP-2000, but I didn't like the sounds as much, so I sold the GNX2.

Of course, these days I'm back to an old-fashioned pedalboard made up of assorted stompboxes. It's definitely not as easy as a modeling board where you can stomp one button and change everything, but it's not too bad.. I'm a pretty simplistic with my effects.

when i got my 5150 combo, i though i needed to get a multi effect unit. i tried a couple units, cant remember which ones at this time........anyway, i didnt like the extra noise i was getting through these units!

was i getting all the noise because they were cheap pieces of junk, were my cords bad?

i have learned to do without effects as of lately....the 5150 combo sounds pretty kick ass w/ out effects, IMO!

maybe down the road i will try a effects rack again? these models that you'all are talking about, are these like $400+ units? is it kinda like the old saying, "you get what you pay for"?

I also play in a cover band and wanted one unit that I could give me the sounds I needed for the wide variety of songs we do. I checked into a lot of them, but settled on the ME-50. Don't buy it new, however--do like I did and check eBay. You can get one in great condition at a considerable savings over new.

Still being stuck in the 80's and using a rack, I've just taken out the Rocktron Intellifex and replaced it with a TC Electronics G Force.

This really is a stunning unit and seems to allow a lot more basic tone through whilst adding top quality effects.

Used it at a rehearsal yesterday for the first time and couldn't stop widdling betwen songs.

I'm surprised I made it out alive in retrospect!:)

I've heard great things about the Replifex, Intellifex, etc. Good bang for the buck for effects to put in the loop.

Interesting thread. I have been trying out a bunch of multi effects boxes recently, and to my ears, the Digitech GNX3000 sounds the best out of the box. I tried the BOSS GT-8, Digitech GNX4, and the POD XTLive as well. Features wise, the GT-8 is amazing with its different amp modes, the ability to make your own effects chain, and the dynamic picking sensor to switch amp channels. The GNX4 is also loaded with features like an 8 track recorder and MP3 player/programmable drum machine, but the amp models aren't all that great (unless you use the MFX supermodels pack). The digitech boxes have the cool feature of warping amps using which you can make a whole bunch of hybrid amps (pretty cool stuff)The digitech and line6 products also have the advantage of excellent software bundles to tweak your sound and record. To my ears however, the GNX3000 sounds the best and I am considering buying this unit.

Having said that, all these units are modelers and sound best through stereo headphones or powered studio monitors (tube power amps like the Mesa 20/20 work great too) which give you a fuller range than speakers voiced for guitar amps. Guitar preamps tend to color the tone of these modelers too much IMHO though I was able to get some cool tones by plugging the units into my amp's effects return and bypassing the preamp altogether.

Just my $0.02 :)

Have in mind that the Rocktron stuff is now made in China:-(( and even the US made Intellifex etc. did some weird EQ ing to your guitar signal when used serial.

I have an TC Major, best buy for the money.

Hey Mick, what MIDI controller do you use with the Gmajor? If you use one... :)

I use a german made Brandstaetter and Rebholz FP-1, it´s like a Bradshaw built like a tank.
But there are many of them out there, try to get one with metal switches.
They are more expensive but live they work a long time.
I don´t know if the ENGL midi board Z 15 is available in the US. But you sure have some stuff identical over there. Stay away from the Behringer stuff, not good!
If your only at home use a Rocktron midi mate
Good luck

I'm using a Boss GT-6 and really like the variety of effects, the programability, ease of use and convenience of having it all in one package.

I use it to expand my sound live by running it in stereo through rack preamp, poweramp to cabs. The stereo chorus, stereo flanger, panning can be used subtley to increase the "bigness" factor.

I rarely use the amp models live because I don't run direct to a PA; however, they are very tweakable for recording purposes.

I have read great reviews of the GT-8 on the bossgtcentral.com forum, too.
