Naw Dizz, unfortunately the grill doesn't come off the Badger cab. I'll see about taking it apart at some point so I can't take pics.

I know it's a departure from the CAA cabs (which I think were close to the Thiele design). It's definitely not beamy, one of the reasons I like it. As for dimensions, it's been tuned for a V30- designed to even out the midrange spike (so it's quite even sounding). So not sure that would help you with the EVs.

Thanks anyway Beej.

You're right about the V30......... which makes me more set on sticking to the Thiele design.......
I want a flat response, and the cab is designed specifically for the EVM12L, so I probably can't go wrong.

A friend who already built some HIFI-speakers told me that opposite. The widht of the ports has something to to with the frequencies that are emphasized or not. I don't have any clue about the theory behind it, though

Well anyway.. if somebody who has an original MB Thiele cabinet could measure the width of the three ports... that would be really nice :)

As the ports are effectively linked internally, I don't think varying the width beween the dividers would change anything ?

UPDATE :

Just got an email back from the cab builder - the Thiele's are ready to go !

Here's a few pics he sent :

I'm stoked with the pics - these are top notch builds to the exact EV TL806 Plans :
Premium 3/4" void free Baltic Birch, all Dovetail joinery.

Unlike the MESA style (they laid them on the side), I've stuck with the TL design - takes up less space on the ground and gets the speaker a bit higher.

Can't wait to bolt the EVM12L Black Labels in !
(Although it's going to be a shame to hide them, they are one awesome looking speaker)

That's awesome! Nice choice with the custom cabs. I like them standing up like that instead of laying down like Mesa's thieles. Those should rock the house!

I've just landed 2 EVM12L Black Labels and need to make a decision for the cab(s)

I was set on getting 2 Thiele cabs made, but the new-gen ported 2x12's (Port City, Genz Benz etc ) are very tempting.

I'd dearly like to get one of Port City's 2x12 cabs to give a try, but it ain't an option here in Oz.

I think I'm going to have to get them built by this wizard cab builder in the West Aussie country : M C Custom Cabinets
(Check out his gallery for the superb work)

The two 1x12's would be great for portability, and separation for stereo - but they are very directional. Maybe beam blocker might do the trick.

I reckon an oversize ported 2x12 like the Port City cab would sound huge, and give a fuller sound - with far less "beaming".

For some reason, the internal volume of the newer cabs is way more (per speaker) than the Thiele TL806 (the cab design using thiele parameters).

Obviously I lose all separation options for stereo with the 2x12.

The other option is ditching the Thiele idea and going for oversized 1x12's.

Opinions ??

hey Dizzy. sorry to chime in late here.

in my experience, i'd opt for the ported 2x12. i've had 2 1x12 boogie theile cabs before. they were awesome but they throw of them wasn't that great and as you said, very directional. great for stage/stereo spread but if you aren't gonna mic them, the people at the back won't hear you unless you're blasting them on stage. which in turn has its down side.

i've currently got a boogie 3/4 back 2x12 and it kicks a$$ ! it has a huge sound, add amazing tightness to the bottom end when combined with my 2x12 lonestar. so i retain the sparkle cleans at high end and have low end grunt when i need it. good spread and good throw.

hope that helps.

I'm partial to the 3/4 back cabs too. I had a 1x12 3/4 back when I had my Roadster and my Rectoverb combo is a 3/4 back design. They rival the thiele cabs in bass response and have better highs IMO. I took my thiele and Roadster down to my local music store a while back and A/Bed several cabs. The 3/4 back was the best of the bunch I tried (Roadking cab, Recto cab included).

I've not heard a 2x12 3/4 back, but i'd like to!

they are a superb little cab. you should look into them. (granted all you'll see are a pair of speakers and some wiring :D )

but they are well worth their weight in gold.

EVM 12L Stand Alone

Do not waste your money on the Black Label EVM 12Ls, "vintage" 12Ls, or any 200 watt 12Ls made between mid 80s through 90s. Search on Craigslist, Pawn Shops, and Ebay for the original EVM12Ls that are rated at 300 watts. You can mount them into a rubbermaid crate and it will blow anything out of the water with surprising attack and control of all levels of sound quality. I searched high and low for mine and mounted them in an old Crate 212 amplifier I gutted. It sounds better than the best 412. It made my supertwin worth keeping. Yes they are heavy as F, but are well worth lugging around with the dolly. Don't be surprised if you pay more for a 29 yr old speaker than a reissue, but they are worth their weight and high $$$.

Hehe - this is a pretty old thread.

have a look and you'll see I went with two custom 1x12's Thieles with
EVM12L Black Labels.

I'm stoked with them :)

Last year I retired my 1973 Hiwatt 4x12" from touring and replaced it with 2 Mesa Thieles Road ready - since this decision my backliner offers me a blowjob every gig we play. So it´s up to you;)

I play fairly big stages and never had a problem hearing me or not having no bass or sounding thin. And sometimes I decide to take only one with me.
