....and other EBers of course :D

I'm curious about the neck finish on my 'Ray:

Serial# 41871. Trans White with Rosewood. D.O.B. 11 May 1994.

The neck finish appears to be a laquered SATIN (as opposed to oil and wax). Just want to make sure it's satin. I've always assumed it to be the case but recently became aware of the fact that oil and wax was also in use at this time aswell.

Gav,

I am not positive, but I don't think we were doing oil and wax in '94 .......Derek?

Sounds Like the Conversion Varnish finish(Velvet) we were doing back in the early 90's. We transitoned to oil and wax somewhere around this time. One way you can tell is if there is a distinct line where the headstock starts because the oil and wax necks have a laquered back and front headstocks. The velvet finish is the same all the way up the neck and headstock.

Thanks

Derek....the back of the neck appears darker than the headstock. There's a distinct line...or cut off point (behind the nut) where the finish changes abruptly to a lighter finish for the headstock. The headstock appears to have a satin (velvet) finish aswell.

Gav,

The Headstocks do not have a Laquered finish. My mistake Its called a dull rub finish that looks like velvet.

The velvet necks of the early 90's when new look exactly like the headstock. There would be no distinct line below the nut. The velvet finish will get shiny over time when the back of the hand will "polish" the neck from use.

There is a line between the oil and wax and the dull rub headstock. The oil and wax neck will get darker over time from playing wear, and the dull rub headstock will appear brighter.

I Hope this will clear things up.

Derek
