Hi Steve,
I've dug out DUNE (pardon the pun) on VHS tonight whilst having a 'creative playing' session with my HH Sterling and I gotta say that I forgot you all did the soundtrack !!!
awesome friggin' soundscapes man!

I was wondering, any found memories of the making of the tunes? any "fun" stories involving Mr. Lynch?? I can only imagine that dinner with the guy that brought us Blue Velvet and the rest would be possibly entertaining or atleast have the potential to be.

anywho, thanks in advance for any and all info.

cheers!

Peter

It was really David Paich's baby and the band added parts to some of the songs. THe band instrumentals are good though. Make sure you pick up the more recent extended soundtrack version. Very cheap on Amazon.

hahahaha Dune

Well, we had the best intentions. the movie is so bad its a cult classic and funny as hell. Wasnt supposed to be. hahah. It was MEANT to be star wars 2..not quite. hahahaha It was never finished. They pulled the plug on it. Poor David was bummed. a VERY hard story to make happen in 2 hours in 1982. The reason we took the gig was we didnt have a singer at the time. we wanted to do a REAL soundtrack where we would write orchestral stuff NOt like today where they just throw in any random indie tune to EVERYTHING TV and movies. etc.. BUT it was a challenge and *I* really wanted to work with Lynch. We had a BLAST and he is the coolest guy! We had lunch everyday and I have alot of cool stories. The funny thing IS he is not that weird at all. Never swears nor does he seem disturbed at all. A true gentleman that has made some OUT movies! haha I have the original script to Blue Velvet that he gave me himself. Quite a bit more OUT . Frank's rave with the laughing gas scene in the movie is a classic right? imagine if it had heilium too. haha It does in the script! Imagine how funny THAT would have been. there is more but I dont have the time. A great experience, a really bad movie. I feel for Sting on this one. hahahaha
We turned down Footloose for this. haha 10 million records later.. I played on that soundtrack too but I digress..
But I would LOVE to work with dave again if the possibility ever comes up. Last time I saw hiw was at Twin Peaks taping that one of my best pals Miguel Ferrer and Kyle Maclaughlin were doing and he saw me and stopped the taping. hahaha Very cool guy!
I spoke to him last year and he wanted to hang. I hope that happens. He is a genius and watch ALL of his other films.

Awesome, thanks Lucious. Ya, if David would have had the budget/technology/support that Peter Jackson had for Lord of the Rings then I think it would have been a much different outcome to the legacy of Dune.

I figured that Lynch would be fairly 'striaght'...... it keeps a lid on all that , that is brewing beneath :D

sounds like it was a cool time though. And yes he's an absolute American treasure! Mulholland Drive.................. oh what a couch scene.

:D

They released Dune in a TV cut version which was closer to 3 hours over here and it is certainly a lot better. The worm still looks like cardboard though!!!

And I did once play at "guess the number of tracks with Luke playing" on Footloose as my wife is a fan of the film (I know, but hwat can you do!). I just sat there noting "yup, that's Luke", "nope, that's Sammy Hagar" etc etc. Passed the time anyway ;)

If it makes you feel better, I'd watch Dune over Footloose anyday......mainly for Francesca Annis in her heyday of course :D

Dune (the book) was ironically one of George Lucas's inspirations for Star Wars.
