hey, check out this pre-ernie on ebay....you might want to add it to your database...stingray bass b002037 ...also, i am interested in bidding on this onestingray bass 2 ...can you tell me if it is a 1977 by the photos....also, does it appear all original....any and all inout would be greatly appreciated...also, what do you think a fair price for it might be? thanks again, patrick

hey gav...please give me your thoughts on this one too....what is original and what is not? thanks in advance for your help! 1978 stingray ........

what is original and what is not?

First, I'd say the finish and pickguard are not. Heh heh, sorry, just hadda do it.

I can't see much from those photos - what is WRONG with people? - but the one area of concern I would have is the truss rod bullet adjuster. It looks odd, for some reason, like it's way too far out of the slot.

You can also figure on that tuner - at least that one - having to be replaced.

WTF happened to that guard? Why would anyone GLUE sandpaper in the neck pocket? I've used small bits of sandpaper as a shim but to GLUE it to the entire pocket? I don't like that at all.

Plus those basses have a tilt-o-matic adjuster which is accessible through the neck plate, but that one would be rendered useless, I would think, by the giant sheet of sandpaper.

Weird.

The bass is probably a 78 or 79, but I sure wouldn't offer much for it. It's been beat up pretty good.

Hope that helps.

Jack

I know that the pickups during 1976 and 1977 had pole pieces that extended out through the bottom of the pickup casing and the cavity had to be routed deeper. The cavity on this one has been routed but I don't know if that is original routing or not. I've hardly seen any Basses with the pickup removed and have nothing to go on for comparison.

The pre-amp is not period correct. That style amp was introduced in 1979. Prior to that they covered in black epoxy.

Some people feel that sandpaper in the neck pocket prevents shifting of the neck. Another red flag IMO

That's why I was thinking 79.

Jon, I'd forgotten about that neck-shift business. That all started with the three-bolt neck attachment on Fender basses, and was pretty much - IMO - a load of crap. I had a ton of three-bolters and none of them ever shifted.

But now I remember people and sandpaper and the seventies and big hair and smoking pot and then disco came along and the world went to shiite.

Thats right!! It's all coming back to me now.

Do you remember what we were doing in the 80s?

That's all kind of a blur. I remember sleeping with girls who looked like the lead singer from the Cure, only cuter and with breasts.
