More headroom, it´s usually on EMG Bass Pickups, so if you slap you won´t distort the internal preamp of the pup.
I don´t see the purpose on guitars since you never will reach this induction that the pup itself will distort with the guitar strings.

If it would improve the sound EMG would have done it.

I cant put my finger on exactly what is different but it sounds better. All of my guitars have 85 in the bridge and only one has 18 volts but it sounds better. It has more clarity or something. I didnt notice it when I did it either right off. It was switching guitars after playing that one for a while I noticed my amp didnt sound as good. Maybe it is something else but I will figure it is the 18 volts.

Any one know if this is safe to do?
well if you believe the urban myth, it will only be unsafe if you stick the batteries on your tongue. Apparently 3 people die a year from doing so.
