Just got my SUB 5 back today from ernieball after having the frets stoned due to and excessive amount of fret buzz. Its had new strings put on it and there is fret buzz. Im pretty sure its buzzing due to new strings and the sounds tinny but can sum1 clear that up for me.

When did you have us do the work on it? I don't remember working on a SUB 5 recently. Do you know what the R/A # was?

No idea. I live in UK incase theres a branch in UK. Whats R/A number? About the stoning frets pretty sure its like sanding certain ones down to get a bumb out that may be causing a buzz

Where does the buzzing occur and on which string? Rod posted a good summary on how to setup a MM bass guitar here. For more comprehensive info, do a search on the forum.

correct me if I'm wrong pls

Hey Kats,
~
re the buzz with new strings ...

believe it or not, when I originally brought (1st) 2nd Sister home from L&M's SR5 nursery (after 9PM Friday) and had calmed myself down, washed my hands, (fresh undies are unmentionable and therefore go without saying) I just about croaked when I found a pretty nasty buzz at several places, and a general lack of life all over the B string ... I started to sweat ... and everything got worse and loosening and retightening and pulling and retuning didn't help ... so then I thought about a possible bad string ...

and then I placed a call to a very charitable, local "topgun" bass guru (Sadowsky player) but he was out ...

and then, I recalled an article in an old Bass Player about the importance of keeping "twists" out of a string when winding on a fresh one ... (I'm a fingers-only winder)

carefully, I loosened the B and then held it fixed at the bridge while I proceeded to fully unwind and detach it at the pegend ...

lo & behold if immediately on release, but still held tight at the bridge, the string flipped 180 degrees ... happy daze !!!

it was in fact delivered with a twisted B string which L&M never had a chance to find and adjust because I had insisted on being present at shop closing when baby's case was first reopened after shipping & receiving, and to administer her first inspection and spanking ...

after resetting the original B string (because I wanted to save it if I could) into place, it tightened and tunedup fine ... and then we had what we needed ...

and then there was no sleep that night :)))
~

coincidently, that handle on the original case for that unit fell apart in our hands at the store when we first removed it from the shipping carton because it had a bent and badly peened rivet at one end ... L&M immediately swapped cases with another new SR5 ...

When I first got mine it buzzed like mad, i have set the neck pretty much flat and the action as low as it will go without buzzing, like many on here I played it for a week or so before it stopped, i think it was down to the strings settling, if I were you I would play it for a week or so 1/2 hour per night and see what happens then attempt to set it up again. Try raising the action a little, im a really heavy player and often make crap basses buzz, the sub is the only bass ive ever played whereby i can get the action as low as I want it without buzz. Incindentally i live in england

Ive now played it for bout 2 hours a night since tuesday and the buzzing is still there. As its been to a workshop i woulda thought the buzzing would go. Is it normal but it happens alot when i go from an open B or E string to say the 10th fret as the string gets depressed against the metal fret markings thats wot makes the horrible buzzing sound. Surely im not doomed with this bass :(

If I were you man I'd go find & follow some set-up instructions (there are some in here somewhere).

Shops do not always do the best job & for that little bit of extra satisfaction before you decide something is seriously amiss, try doing set-up yourself. Maybe not truss adjustments, but saddles etc etc.

Worth a try......

Already done the whole set up before but failed to get the buzzing to go. Tried messing with the action and it got to a point where the action was way too high to play comfortably. I sweat the shop said they sent it off to ernieball maybe a uk workshop. Im phoning them tomoz to find out exactly wot happened to my bass, where it went and wot was done on it. Its just farstrating buying a bass that u hear so much gd about then when u get it its just problems.
