Well i have lowered the action to be extremly low and somehow that has got rid of a little bit of the buzz. Putting on a thicker gauge of strings would that help with the buzz as their a tighter fit string. Say if i had a .135, .105, .85 and kept the .65, .45 would that help with buzz on the B, E, A string. Also ive heard the thicker gauge string the harder it is to depress. With low action is that true and with a thicker gauge will it sound bad at slap/pop

Well, an extremely low action will have some effect on buzz I would say, for the obvious reson that the strings are closer to the fretboard.

I do not personally believe that gauge should make too much difference (I use 50, 70, 90 & 100 on my 4 string Ray, which on occasion I've had to ask shops to break into 5 string sets for!).

It sounds like it's just a case of fiddling til you get it. Maybe see if you can have a look at photos of other 5'ers from varying angles to see how they look in terms of saddle position etc (Bovine & Rod have a fair few on their sites).

Good luck.

Well when i lowered the strings it took off the slightest bit of buzz. I keep thinking im doomed for with this bass as ernie ball didnt get rid of the fret buzz who can?. Is it me or when u go from an open B, E or A string to the 10th fret as the string is depressed against the metal fret inlay it makes a buzz. Turning all the treble and mids down gets rid of mainly all the buzz through the amp but the tone is way too bassy. It happens unplugged or through an amp. I really dont want to fiddle about with the truss rod ive been tweaking the bridge trying to get a good action but its no use.

Any suggestions?

Assuming there's no technique issues, could be a high or loose fret?

Well a week ago i got it back from ernie ball and they stoned a couple of frets so im assuming it cant be a fret problem. Ive just had this problem since Feb earlier this year and i just really wanna get it sorted. Ive played a few other 5ers and they didnt have any fret buzz, its just confusing for me why this is STILL happening

Melv...I think I told you before we did NOT work on your SUB. It sounds like whoever did the fret dressing didn't do it right, or the bass is not set up right. I would take it back to the place that did the work on it, and have them do it right.

I only said that as that is wot i was told. Ill take it back to the shop again and talk to them exactly wot is happening. Last time i did it they seemed like they couldnt see a problem but there clearly was a problem. Ill go in next couple of days and post up wot happens

Get a result, Melv. You spent your money at their shop, they owe it to you to provide a decent instrument.

Melv, you live in the UK. The Ernie Ball Company is in California, USA. I'm pretty sure the shop you took your bass to did not ship it to the United States for a simple set up. The cost would have been astronomical (for a set up) to do this. If your shop continues to tell you they sent it to Ernie Ball, they're either dishonest or woefully misinformed. They may have sent it to the UK distributor as Jon suggested, but even that I find difficult to believe. A guitar shop that doesn't have a competent guitar tech? I'd take it back and ask that they work on it while you wait, or let them know that you'll be back later in the day to pick it up. A set up shouldn't take that long unless there's something drastically wrong with your bass's neck. Good luck getting this straightened out.

Melv,

The tech at House Of Guitars (formerly the Bass Centre) is great.

Take your sub with you & see if they'll do anything. They are near Liverpool Street station, in Brune Street (use Streetmap.co.uk).

Good luck man. I reckon the least you'll get is one of the guys at the counter looking at it & telling you straigh off if there is a problem. If not, hopefully tech will have time to look at it (he's a busy man!)

Cheers for that JB1. I was down denmark street in london yesterday and tried out a MMSUB5 same colour active (same as mine). No fret buzz what so ever i was amazed as i never had played a SUB5 with no fret buzz. Sounded amazing although it may of had a slightly thicker gauge strings on as they felt thicker. Ill be in contact with stringsandthings today as emailed ernieball and they said try talking to stringsandthings. So hopefully something will come out of that.

Does anyone know the email address for strings and things? Did have it but lost it somewhere

No worries Melv. I think that tells you a lot about your own bass i(n that I would suggest summink aint right).

As Jon has said, EB didn't get the geetar back for set up- shipping it trans atlantic for that would be madness. One thing to learn here is that it may be the shopy ou got it from have told you some porkies, so be insistent that you get what you want or a new bass. Jon's staff at EB so you've had it from the horses mouth that they never had it.

Good luck.
