Hi all,

I'm looking at getting my first MM. Every electric I've owned to date has humbuckers, so that's definitely what I'm used to playing. But every now and then I'd like to get some of that "Texas Honk" going - something I've not been able to do with my past guitars.

So, I'm curious if anyone's managed to get that classic Strat sound out of their Axis?

Indeed, if anyone has songs they've done that I could listen as mp3s, I'd love to check them out!

Thanks in advance!

Now if you were trying to get that SRV sound, would it be better with SSS or
MM90s???

TylerDowBryant with a quickie recording of his SSS Albert Lee on a Marshall TSL 100 with 4x12 cabinet. When using his regular amps (Peavey Delta Blues and Fender Vibroverb), the Albert Lee gets a very bluesy tone.

Highly recommended for your application!

The F****r SRV signature model should do the trick! (JUST KIDDING!!) ;) ;) ;)

Apparently the AL is good (I haven't had the pleasure to play one, so I can't advice you on that...), but I think a Silhouette Special with SSS has got some killer SRV-tones aswell!

Like you need another forumite telling you the same thing.
But they're right dammit:)
My Albert, strung with a set of Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms is just the thing for a bit of Scuttle Buttin (like I can play that fast).

I have a Silo Special with the HSS config, and I get really cool, bluesy tones in all of the single-coil positions.

But the question is: what about the Super Sport? With the two single coils kicked in, do you get that single coil sound? I've got a Axis SS coming and am wondering the same thing.

Basically, if you want true triple single coil sounds you can't really get them from a dual HB guitar, even splitting the coils. It's not to say you can't get good sounds or usable sounds, you just won't get the same sounds, based on positioning, selection, voicing etc.

The splits on the ASS won't give you a single alone, it is alway paired with one of the coils from the other pup. It will provide more of a Tele vibe with both pups up. Again, good sounds, but they won't nail the sound asked about.

My opinion:
The sound of the humbuckers on the Super Sport is warmer than single coils, less sharp... If you want a bit of a sharper tone on the Super Sport, you should go for the MM90's, they are a bit tighter and tend more towards a single coil sound.

It's all about personal taste of course... The best way to find out is to try and find one that you can play! :D

The other thing to keep in mind (other than the fact that split HBs don't sound exactly like good single coils) is that on the ASS the coils are further away than on the AL. That gives you more of the tele vibe and less of the "quack" strat vibe than you'll get from an SSS guitar.
