hey guys!!

i know alot of you are from the states but i was wondering if any forumites would recommend any uni's in sydney for studying bass?

i desperately want to study at ICMP (institute of contemporary music performance) in london but simply cant afford the course fees at the moment (circa £6,000)... so my plan is to go back to aus and do a year at a uni there where the government will lend me the money to study and help me out a little with rent costs etc. and then apply for the scholarship which EBMM so generously gives and hopefully get my ass back to the motherland.

question is... do any universities come recommended to you guys? ive found one or two online but with something like this i really want to know that im going to be in a course that will help me grow and not just be trying to build a name for itself as a 'prestigious uni'. thats what i have loved about ICMP, they seem to be really down to earth in helping people learn. also comes recommended from my current bass teacher who is in their bachelor degree and she is a freaking legend. :)

do EBMM support any australian music colleges??

thanks in advance
xoxo :D

Tiff, I live in Sydney, so I might be able to help you narrow the options down, but I'm so old that I didn't realise that people can now study bass guitar at university. In my university days it was boring stuff like economics, engineering or psychology. There was also card playing, surfing, drinking, pogoing on the dance floor, and playing rugby, but none of those were accredited courses as far as I can remember.

I think you can study bass guitar at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. You'd be close to both me and Jack, although this is probably less than helpful to you, given your geological constraints. :)

Good luck with your plans Tiff.

Why Sydney in particular? Have you family there?

Have you considered Perth? Great music scene here and you could supplement your income and put the theory into practice.

lol thanks for the 'help' guys haa haa....

i know.. the idea of 'studying' bass is still not widespread... thus the search for a uni is a little more difficult.

ive looked at the con but as with most they only offer classical. had a look at JMC Academy... and AIM... im thinking that i might work in sydney for 6 months before i apply and go to some open days or try short courses with the unis.

the point of a uni course for me is just to make it a priority. life tends to crowd it out otherwise.... i want to really give this whole thing a shot.

benny ill come study under you hey??

ps... check out the ICMP site, you guys will be inspired at what they are teaching!

I know it's not much help, and it's a little off topic, but bass study isn't too uncommon around here, at least. I apologize.

USM has a great professor of bass, Dr. Marcos Machado. I think he holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts? He plays electric very well too; I know a student.

Anyway, it is possible, as well as pretty cool, and I know for a fact that he is a MONSTER player. So are most of his students; I know one.

That's probably where I'm going.
I don't know anything about the Land Down Under, or any colleges there.

Here's a link, if you want to read about the guy.
