Hello,

I got this guitar last week at Guitar Center under Clearance. Can someone with enough knowledge help me spot if this is fake or real please? Thank You so much in advance!!
I bought in clearance because it was missing its whammy bar and the finish has a crack near the arm bevel and to get the dimarzio pickups rather than buying a jp60 and then upgrading the pickups.

Suggestion: Do NOT use Chrome to view the videos, if they don't play back use Safari or Firefox. I don't know about IE.

I set it up and this is what I found:
1.-Neck pickup is louder, even when set at a lower level.
2.-The trem insert screws go ALL THE WAY through the body, that is, from the top of the guitar through the tremolo cavity.
3.-The trem post screws themselves are wobbly and will only stay put when screwed all the way in, so I had to do that and then raise and radius the saddles.
4.-The lacquer where the inserts are is completely cracked.
5.-The locking tuners are also wobbly, even when tightened at the top bolt and the bottom screws, they are very similar to the ones you can get at all parts for about 50, with plastic locking knobs.
6.-This is the part that makes me feel silly, there's a brown line painted all around the silhouette of the body that I don't see on any guitar only and you can clearly see the body is comprised of three different pieces of wood.
7.-The pickups are missing the Dimarzio Logo.

So in summary the things that I'm concerned about are:
1.-The wobbliness of the locking tuners and the tremolo posts.
2.-The way the tremolo inserts were installed, going through the body.
3.-The weird brown line.

Trem arm arrives tomorrow, based on the tests I did at GC it should be alright but I still have to test extensively.

That looks like a SBMM JP100D with koa top to me.

The DiMarzio pickups for SBMM and EBMM do not have the logo stamped on the bobbins.

The pinstripe is there to show separation of the koa top and mahogany body.

As far as the wobbly trem posts go, one of my customers had a similar problem with the used Koa JP100D he bought on ebay. The guitar was most likely slammed around pretty good during shipping (or otherwise abused) because the posts had cracked the body and the trem was actually contacting the edge of the route. I removed the bushings, drilled the holes slightly oversize, installed dowels, then drilled the correct diameter hole to reinstall the bushings. Stability problem solved. Yes, the screws go into the area with the springs.

Thanks for addressing this, what was your experience with the tuners, did they wobble too. I'm thinking about getting a Wilkinson or get better screws. The inserts are fine btw, the problem are the posts, I think slightly thicker ones would do the trick.

I had the same concern with an SBMM Majesty I had purchased. It was by far the worst guitar I've ever owned and such a drop off from the EBMM's that I owned that I couldn't believe they would put their name on it. I was assured it was real though.

I returned a SB Jp60 because of tuning stability issues, which now I know why, and a jp100D that was new because the 16th or 18th fret were buzzing a bit. Given this was bout 3 years ago when I had NO CLUE how a guitar works. Now I am able to modify guitars, paint them, do fret levels and set them up. A lot of trial and error has passed and I'm sure I'm way behind a good professional but I can assure this is still a great design and to be honest it plays better than my Ibanez RG652 Green Nebula tuned by Rich at "Ibanez Rulez", I just wanted to make sure I wasn't scammed and to give feedback here.

I'm curious, what are you comparing yours to?

Started guitar when I was 5 and have been playing for more than 35 years so I've owned a lot of guitars. Mostly imports until about 5 years ago. Sum total Ive probably owned 30 different guitars through my lifetime. The SBMM majesty was the worst. The paint job was terrible (paint on the fretboard, some glossy areas on a matte finish, inconsitencies in the paint). The frets were horrible, not level, sticking out, etc. It played poorly, wouldnt stay in tune. Just all around a bad guitar. My 3 EBMMs (Majesty, Majesty Artisan, and Valentine) are probably the 3 best guitars I've owned. That's why I was so shocked that the SBMM was so bad.

Well, considering I paid a small fraction of even a used Jp6 I'm not complaining much, I am just skeptic as to how bad this one looked when compared to the same model I got a couple of years back. And of course this is somewhat subjective because like I said, I know much more about guitars now and was able to take a closer look. Still I couldn't believe the trem posts looked so bad, I've never seen them like that before. Thanks for the heads up btw, I was looking into that one.
